ACADEMIC ADULT CARDIAC SURGEON

 

McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences are seeking an academic Cardiac Surgeon. Hamilton Health Sciences serves a catchment area of more than 2.5 million residents providing comprehensive care across the sites of Hamilton Health Sciences. Our academic cardiac surgeons perform over 1,600 open-heart cases annually.   The service provides tertiary and quaternary level care to patients within the catchment area and plays an essential role in the support of other Programs including Interventional Cardiology, Thrombosis, and Vascular Surgery.  The Cardiac Surgery Division within the Department of Surgery, McMaster University has a fully accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada training program in Cardiac Surgery with full involvement in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education programs.

The successful candidate will be located at the Hamilton General Hospital Site and will be expected to demonstrate experience and training in the management of cardiac surgery appropriate for a tertiary academic referral centre. Formal fellowship training in the areas of minimally invasive and catheter-based valve surgeries would be an asset. Familiarity with lead extraction would be of benefit, as would expertise working in a residency training program.  Previous experience and a track record in academic research are expected. 

 

The successful candidate will be expected to show evidence of exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills with initiative to further advance the clinical and academic productivity of the Cardiac Surgery Service.  This is a full-time academic appointment in the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, and McMaster University  and academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.   A commitment to surgical education at all levels is essential, as well as active participation in the academic initiatives of the Cardiac Surgery Division, including leadership in research. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to teaching, including resident education and training in Cardiac Surgery.  Divisional members also support undergraduate as well as postgraduate training.

 

Applicants must have a Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery, Certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent, and be licensed or eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario.
