About the Unit

 

Humanities Media and Computing (HMC) is a dynamic unit within the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University, dedicated to delivering innovative technology and computing support. HMC partners with faculty, staff, and students to enhance teaching, research, and administrative activities through tailored digital solutions and services. The unit is driven by a strong commitment to service excellence, adaptability, and continuous improvement, thriving in an environment of evolving technologies. HMC prides itself on its collaborative approach and its ability to effectively solve complex technical challenges, helping to advance the Faculty’s academic mission.

 

General Responsibilities

 

Responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of information technology infrastructure for a department or faculty. Manage networks and servers, and configure, test, implement, maintain, and repair all supported network, server, email, and microcomputer products for a department or faculty.

 

Representative Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain information technology infrastructure for local and partner sites.
  • Facilitate meetings with clients to interpret, assess, and evaluate customer business requirements in order to establish 
    project scope and design criteria for the modification and revision of existing systems.
  • Provide financial projections and budgeting for technical projects and technology acquisitions as needed. 
  • Provide estimates of time and resources required to complete projects.
  • Write complex programs using various computing and scripting languages.
  • Design large complex databases for a program or department.
  • Design, implement, maintain and support large language model environments and related computing infrastructure for research, teaching, and administrative applications.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot server systems, open-source technologies, and machine learning frameworks used to support data processing, automation, model testing, and large language model workloads.
  • Assist with and maintain vendor relationships including contracts for cloud and Software as a Service solution.
  • Prepare and maintain a comprehensive Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) that includes contingency plans for recovering services and operations after incidents such as power blackouts, water damage, or structural building failures and contribute to the planning and development of disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Manage and test archived data files, systems, virtual machines and databases.
  • Identify, document, and manage backups including schedules, automation processes, and restore timelines.
  • Undertake projects such as performance monitoring and capacity planning to monitor the overall reliability and effectiveness of the computing systems and information processing architecture including storage area networks.
  • Diagnose, assess, circumvent, and find remedies for a variety of service incidents that deviate from planned or expected information system behaviour.
  • Exercise appropriate controls, monitor, and reconcile accounts.
  • Manage technical records using systems services, and external domain registrars.
  • Update and maintain a complete inventory of server and network hardware, software, and peripherals.
  • Perform routine technical tasks related to the maintenance and administration of single sign-on authentication for server systems and services.
  • Provide expertise and practical assistance in delivering services that comply with established campus and industry standards.
  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize problems and complaints to ensure that inquiries are successfully resolved. Escalate as appropriate.
  • Act as a consultative resource by providing information and assistance to others regarding the use of hardware, software, network, and other moderately complex information technology elements.
  • Carry out investigative work on a variety of requirements, information flow, and processes
  • Elicit additional information from users to accurately diagnose problems.
  • Implement non-standard solutions and work-arounds.
  • Evaluate hardware, software, and transmission service alternatives as business requirements change.
  • Localize and rectify faults in network connectivity and applications and respond to non-routine user problems.
  • Analyze, examine, and validate processes.
  • Interpret technical and procedure manuals for non-technical users.
  • Debug computer program code.
  • Develop and modify interfaces for existing applications and systems while maintaining the integrity of data and processes.
  • Support the design and build of department and program websites and web hosting environments.
  • Test functionality of websites in various browsers for quality assurance.
  • Provide technical advice on network and system applications.
  • Provide advice and notifications to users regarding security, equipment configuration, and selection of programming languages and recommended approaches to computing systems solutions.
  • Program small modules of larger departmental applications according to detailed specifications.
  • Design basic record and report formats.
  • Assist with the development and testing of web applications and pages.
  • Plan and coordinate system and software installations.
  • Prepare programming documentation of assigned programs in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Make decisions within established guidelines regarding the application of computing devices or programs to meet set requirements or make decisions regarding solutions to defined problems.
  • Work autonomously in accordance with general instructions as to methods and procedures.
  • Support and troubleshoot user problems to determine if the problem is hardware, software, or procedural.
  • Act as a technical resource and troubleshoot routine and moderately complex information technology problems within an area of expertise.
  • Escalate problems to the appropriate resource and follow-up to ensure the problem has been resolved.
  • Provide users with routine information such as system updates, errors, and features.
  • Elicit additional information from clients and colleagues to diagnose issues.
  • Interact with others to facilitate and promote the effective use of information technology.
  • Provide information and assistance to others regarding the use of hardware and software.
  • Perform routine technical tasks related to the maintenance and administration of a workgroup or department including, but not limited to, assigning passwords, enabling and disabling accounts, and monitoring scheduled backups.
  • Plan, schedule, and monitor own work within short time horizons.
  • Organize individual time, work and resources to accomplish objectives in the most effective and efficient way.
  • Maintain records and prepare documentation related to activities including resources such as web pages and databases.
  • Ensure users receive information and notifications on systems updates, errors and features.
  • Remain current with frequent developments in the field of information technology
 

Supervision: 

  • Provide lead hand responsibility and is responsible for the quality and quantity of work of others.
  • Ongoing responsibility for supervising up to 9 casual employees at any one time
 

Qualifications: 

  •  Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field of study.
  • Requires 3 years of relevant experience.
