Qualifications: 

 

Education: 

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the Province of Ontario under the College Veterinarians of Ontario.
  • Post-graduate diploma or degree in laboratory animal medicine, pathology or science.
  • Eligibility for ACLAM Board certification.
 

Experience: 

  • 2 -5 years’ clinical practice
  • 10 years experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine, eligibility for the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)
 

Knowledge: 

  • CCAC guidelines, assessment certification and Post Approval Monitoring
  • OMAFRA Animals for Research Act
  • Advanced diagnostic pathology skills including morphologic analyses; histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, florescent microscopy, confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, molecular biology analyses
  • Excellent surgical skills; surgeries on all species of research animals used at McMaster University: microsurgeries, stereotactic surgeries, neurosurgeries, intraventricular and intrathecal injection and long-term infusion; anesthesia
  • Advanced skills in new animal model development
  • Training and advising members of academic scientific community including principal investigators, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Extensive knowledge and skills in the procurement and management of a variety of species of laboratory research animals particularly rodents.
  • Extensive knowledge of operating a complex animal care and use program for research animals.
  • Extensive knowledge in housing and operating specialized rodent facilities that includes (but is not limited to) gnotobiotic rodents, genetically engineered rodents, rodents used in stem cell science, behavioural based research, rodents maintained in biohazard Level 2 and 3 units, and various breeding colonies.
  • Extensive knowledge and skills in experimental use in research of a variety of species including acceptable research procedures and techniques. This includes, but is not limited to mammals, fish, reptiles, birds and amphibians.
  • Extensive knowledge in the management and control of health problems in a variety of species
  • Experience with grant preparation, publishing scientific literature and literature reviews.
  • Thorough working knowledge of pertinent animal regulatory, occupational health and safety and labour relation requirements for the purposes of maintaining regulatory compliance in facilities and animal use in research and teaching.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Extensive people and management skills required to operate and manage complex animal facilities and resources.
  • Excellent skills in mentoring, tutoring and training both staff and students to optimize each individual’s best qualities regardless of background.
