Hybrid job: This job offers the opportunity to work from home as part of a hybrid work arrangement. This arrangement will allow you to work some days at a TCHC work location and the rest of the time from home. The amount of time required to work at a TCHC work location is flexible, while considering operational and service delivery requirements.
Make a Difference
This position reports to the Manager, Regional & Tenant Communications and is responsible for planning and implementing communications strategies aimed at external audiences, with a strong focus on tenant communications, to support and promote Toronto Community Housing’s business and communications priorities, with a particular focus on community-level public relations, tenant communications, and support for resident engagement. This position requires a high degree of acumen and discretion, as it is responsible for providing advice to management on sensitive matters and for liaising independently with internal and external stakeholders on high-profile issues.
What You'll Do
Marketing and Communication Planning and Implementation
- Develop and manage long-term, high-profile and complex strategic communications and marketing programs and projects, with a strong focus on communicating with TCHC tenants
- Take a lead role in developing messaging and communications strategies, including by providing input into the annual communications strategy and work plan
- Proactively identify public/community relations, social media and other opportunities, with a focus on Toronto Community Housing tenants
- Develop and implement communications strategies that reflect and reinforce Toronto Community Housing’s goals and strategic priorities with tenants, partners and other key audiences
- Take a lead role in developing an editorial calendar that includes innovative and multi-faceted ways to market messages to intended audiences
- Provide counsel and support to executives and senior managers
- Prepare a range of communications including digital and social media content, newsletter articles, Q&As, news releases, speeches, web copy, tenant information kits and other materials
- Organize community events, tenant consultation meetings and other special events, including by providing directions to other staff involved
- Monitor and measure the effectiveness of various communications tactics, messages, and approaches
- Provide communications counsel and assist TCHC colleagues with preparing presentations, speaking notes, handouts and other supporting materials to ensure maximum effectiveness and consistency with corporate goals and objectives, accessibility guidelines and brand identity
- Maintain strong and effective working relationships with internal clients and stakeholders
- Represent Toronto Community Housing in discussions with external partners and take a lead role in planning and executing key communications strategies with these partners
Team Leadership
- Provides direction to one staff member in a more junior positions on the team
- Supports the Manager, Tenant Communications, in managing the team in the absence of the Manager, Tenant Communications
- Takes a leadership role within the team on high-profile priorities
- Provide direction to and manage relationships with TCHC business leads, subject matter experts, tenant leaders, stakeholders and external partners, including vendors
- Liaises with colleges and associations to recruit suitable students for short-term work placements and internships, if required
Tenant engagement
- Provide strategic communications advice, services and support to senior management on tenant and client engagement activities
- Provide support with handling contentious issues and reputational risks, and leveraging communications opportunities
- Support and work with managers and staff throughout the corporation to build and sustain positive tenant, community and client relations
What You'll Need
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or college in social sciences, liberal arts, humanities, journalism, marketing, public relations, communications or related field, or equivalent experience, or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and on-the-job experience
- Minimum of 7 years of strategic communications experience
- Minimum 3-5 years media relations and issues management experience
- Experience supervising staff and/or leading teams preferred
- Strong ability to manage high-profile sensitive issues in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to deliver expected outcomes in a results-oriented environment with multiple projects, strict deadlines, and changing, competing and at times conflicting priorities
- Demonstrated ability to manage relationships and projects with external partners/vendors
- Excellent organizational skills, with a high level of attention to detail
- Strong networking and relationship building skills, including with executives and board members
- Exceptionally high degree of judgment and discretion; ability to analyze, problem solve and mediate complex situations with multiple stakeholders
- Exceptional writing and editing, project management and presentation skills
- Demonstrated excellence in verbal communication, interview and research skills
- Proven ability to develop and execute complex communications strategies
- Solid understanding of social housing and social issues faced by TCHC residents, staff, business partners, etc.
- Proficient with computer applications, including Microsoft Office, design programs like Adobe Creative Suite and Canva, Content Management Systems such as Drupal and/or SharePoint, social media engagement tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal, project management and presentation skills
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to a variety of stakeholders
