Our Transportation Team is committed to creating connected, resilient, and sustainable communities. We are currently seeking a Team Lead – Roads and Highways to lead and grow our Roads and Highways practice in Southern Alberta. This role is a key leadership position within the Transportation Business Center and offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of our team through business development, technical excellence, people leadership, and strategic growth.
As a Team Lead, you will be empowered to lead a team of technical professionals and will ultimately be responsible for the performance, growth, and success of this group. You will work closely with Business Center Leadership, discipline leads, and sector leaders to deliver high-quality projects, strengthen client relationships, and advance our market presence across Alberta.
This role is well suited for a motivated, collaborative leader with a strong background in road and highway infrastructure, and/or major projects who is passionate about mentoring people, delivering quality work, and contributing to business success.
Your Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery & Technical Leadership
- Provide technical and project leadership on road and highway infrastructure projects of varying size and complexity
- Oversee delivery from planning and concept development through detailed design, tender, and construction support.
- Support, review and lead projects aligned with best practices that leverage skills and expertise across Stantec promoting collaboration from various teams and business centers
- Lead and support multi-disciplinary teams to ensure scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives are met.
- Promote continuous improvement in design delivery, quality management, and operational efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Champion and model a strong safety culture across all projects and activities.
Business Development & Client Relationships
- Grow the Roads and Highways, practice by strengthening existing client relationships and developing new ones.
- Actively lead and support project pursuits, proposals, and strategic business development initiatives.
- Working with Key Account Managers to support growth and top line execution following Stantec's Account Management Program Framework.
- Collaborate with other discipline and sector leads to support integrated, multi-disciplinary opportunities.
- Stay informed on industry trends, emerging delivery models, and market opportunities.
- Represent the Roads and Highways team as a trusted advisor and technical leader with key clients and stakeholders.
Team Leadership & Operations
- Responsible for workforce planning, project resourcing, utilization, and backlog management.
- Lead, mentor, and support a team of engineers, project managers, administrative and technical staff.
- Collaborate with Business Centers across the region and disciplines, leveraging talent collaboratively while identifying opportunities for growth and development.
- Recruit top talent, support professional development, and contribute to succession planning.
- Facilitate goal setting, coaching, performance reviews, and career development discussions.
- Track and manage team performance against established key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Act as a conduit of information between Business Center Leadership, senior leadership, and the Roads and Highways team.
- Ensure corporate, Business Center, and regulatory requirements are met, including training, safety, and professional standards.
- Act as a brand ambassador for Stantec, promoting our culture and leading by example
Your Ideal Capabilities and Credentials
- Proven leadership experience delivering road and highway, infrastructure projects of varying sizes.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, and risk.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, mentor, and develop technical professionals.
- Strong business development and client relationship management skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Sound technical knowledge of road and highway design standards and practices in Alberta.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering and design software including but not limited to AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent & Licensed Professional Engineer.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive and accumulated experience, including project / design management, construction engineering experience, preferably design and construction of roads, highways and major infrastructure projects.
- A more senior individual is generally preferred; however, our team is willing to train the right intermediate candidate who meets the preferred minimum qualifications. An experienced technologist candidate meeting the other requirements of this posting would also be considered for the role.
Location
The ideal candidate would be located in the Red Deer or Calgary office. Position will primarily work in an office setting and may require some travel and field work.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
