Posting Description

We are looking for eager Registered Nurses (RN) to join an innovative job-share program in which the RN's full-time equivalent (FTE) will be shared between unit 8A/6E (Inpatient Haematology/Oncology) and 8B (Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program). In this role, you will assess complex nursing needs and provide well-rounded care to support children and families as they experience acute and chronic illnesses. Nurses at SickKids are leaders who influence and deliver the best in family-centred care. Our nurses recognize and respect the diversity of the community we serve and the uniqueness of each child and family. Through partnerships and collaboration, our nurses strive to promote and restore optimal health and assist children and families to effectively adjust to health challenges.

The aim of the job-share program is to develop and maintain nursing competency throughout the division of Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy. This program recognizes specialized nursing expertise and creates opportunities for nursing staff to gain new skills and experience while promoting balance and resiliency both at a personal level and program wide. Working within these rapidly evolving clinical specialties provides an opportunity for nurses to develop acute clinical skills and a strong foundation of knowledge in pediatrics. You will have the opportunity to care for children and adolescents throughout many phases of treatment including initial diagnosis, acute management, innovate treatments and clinical trials, and palliative care.

Here's What You'll Get to Do

Nurses on 8A/6E and 8B will learn and develop a valued skillset foundational to practice in acute care clinical settings:

  • Administration of blood products, oxygen therapy, enteral and parenteral nutrition
  • Management of care across the phases of the illness continuum, including palliative and end-of-life care
  • Navigation of complex psychosocial dynamics and care challenges related to life-threatening illness and its treatment
  • Involvement in new and innovative therapies and clinical trials
  • Recognition and management of oncologic emergencies
  •  Management of organ dysfunction and related comorbidities
  • Administration of Hematopoietic Stem Cell and Cellular Therapy products including but not limited to bone marrow, CORD transplants and CAR T cells and recognition of adverse reactions during infusion
  • Recognition and management of post-transplant complications, immunosuppression and rehabilitation

Here's What You'll Love

  • A Successful Start - You will participate in a comprehensive paediatric nursing orientation in conjunction with subspecialty orientation and a preceptored clinical practice experience to ensure you have the tools you need to be successful in our unique environment.
  • Specialized Career Ladder and Skills Training - We advance our nurses based on performance and aptitude to train in specialized and highly sought-after skills such as the APHON Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Program. Nurses may also train for unit-based leadership opportunities in a Clinical Support Nurse capacity, a group which functions with enhanced autonomy and navigational leadership amongst an interprofessional team.
  • Continued Learning and Professional Development- Lifelong learning is encouraged through internal programs as well as through external means like academic and conference support. We encourage participation in one of our unit-wide nursing practice committees, interprofessional care rounds, as well as preceptorship & mentorship programs.
  • Supportive Environment - Our RN Council works to ensure we are providing our nurses with a supportive, collaborative, and innovative work environment.
  • Flexible Scheduling - Using 6-week blocks, our scheduling is a fair and collaborative process decided with your input.
