What is the opportunity?
We are looking to add a Senior Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to the Wealth Management Technology & Solutions (WMTS) team at RBC.
SRE is an exciting role that applies engineering discipline to proactively solve operational problems, focused on system availability and efficiency, with the end goal of enhancing user experience.
You will participate in the organizational SRE Academy and directly partner with teams to apply SRE practices to their applications. The successful candidate will collaborate with a cohort of engineers to implement solutions, with the goal of continuously enhancing the resiliency of systems across RBC Wealth Management.
What will you do?
- Lead the implementation of WMTS SRE framework and practices across a portfolio of apps
- Implement predictive, preventative and self-healing automation solutions, including full stack monitoring and centralized logging to enable incident triage and mitigation
- Apply continual and proactive DevSecOps focus to harden systems and minimize risk; implement end-to-end DevOps, QE, and automation solutions within an agile methodology
- Architect and develop automation solutions with your SRE peers in our Calgary Innovation Hub; work with the latest tech and perform R&D while still providing clear value to the business
- Proactively maintain technology currency; cloud-assess and migrate to enabled platforms, where possible; deliver and orchestrate solution re-use and innersourcing across the organization
- Be a key resource in post-incident problem management; perform root cause analysis (RCA) and orchestrate solutions to improve process
- Participate in the WMTS SRE Academy, and lead SRE training sessions for development and support peers across Wealth Management
- Liaise and communicate with a variety of technical and/or business stakeholders on a regular cadence
What do you need to succeed?
Must Have
- An engineering mindset, and strong communication skills with a sense of ownership and drive
- B.S. degree in Computer Science or related technical field (e.g. EE, physics or mathematics), or equivalent practical experience and including:
- 2 – 4 years professional experience as an SRE or DevOps engineer, with a deep understanding of DevOps practices such as IaC (Infrastructure as Code), CI / CD, configuration management, etc.
- 4 – 5 years professional experience in object-oriented programming (e.g. C#, Java, or similar)
- Mastery of one or more scripting languages for automating systems management, e.g. PowerShell, Bash, Go, Python, Ansible
- Proficient in CI / CD platforms such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and UCD
- Experience and deep understanding of Windows and Unix/Linux operating systems as a developer and/or system administrator
- Proficient with containerization systems such as Docker, and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes or OpenShift
- Experience working with database systems such as SQL, DB/2, and MongoDB
- Hands-on experience with a variety of SRE tools (Ansible, Dynatrace, Catchpoint, Moog, PagerDuty, Elasticsearch / ELK stack)
Nice to Have
- MS or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field (e.g. EE, physics or mathematics)
- Experience with public cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS
- SRE or DevOps related Certifications
- Development or operations experience with one or more of:
- Large-scale systems
- Cloud-based applications or services, both public and on premise
- Distributed systems, microservices and/or scale-out database architecture
- Security algorithms and protocols including encryption, authentication or packet inspection
