Summer 2026 Student Program: Technical & Mechanical Support
The Toronto Transit Commission is currently accepting applications for Summer 2026 temporary full-time employment. We offer a wide range of entry level and specialty positions in various locations throughout the City of Toronto. Most positions involve working in a unionized environment. Some positions may involve working outdoors, while others may require specific licenses, skillsets and/or work experience.
Eligibility
- To be considered for summer student employment, you must be:
- Available to work from May 4, 2026 to August 22 or August 28, 2026 (depending on position); students are required to work for the full duration of the term,
- Legally authorized to work in Canada,
- A full-time student, enrolled in Winter 2026 academic term, at an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution and must be returning to their studies the upcoming fall term.

Positions
Our Technical & Mechanical Support category includes a variety of roles that are vital to the reliability and safety of TTC’s transit system. These positions demand a high level of technical skill and practical problem-solving, involving maintenance of complex equipment, diagnosing and resolving mechanical or electrical issues, and ensuring all vehicles and infrastructure meet operational standards. Electrical Helper
- Responsible for construction and repairs across TTC facilities
- Incumbents will shadow a skilled tradesperson in the daily tasks of the electrical construction and maintenance industry.
Escalator Mechanic
- Responsible for the maintenance, diagnostics and repair of the TTC's escalator fleet as part of the Elevating Devices team
- Students will shadow a skilled tradesperson in the daily tasks of repairing and maintaining escalators throughout the TTC system.
Upholstery Helper
- Responsible for supporting TTC’s upholstery team by assisting with seat and fabric maintenance while shadowing experienced tradespeople
- This role provides hands-on exposure to upholstery techniques and transit maintenance operations.
Carhouse Helper
- Responsible for ensuring clean and reliable trains are available for service on TTC’s subway lines
- Incumbents will be heavily involved in supporting annual deep-cleaning projects.
Requirements

- Strong commitment to safety and meticulous attention to detail;
- Experience in material handling and organization;
- Solid understanding of inventory management and workspace cleanliness;
- Proficient in identifying and resolving technical Issues with ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance on equipment;
- Ability to listen, learn and follow instructions;
- Ability to work well in a team environment;
- General Mechanical and or Electrical skills and interest;
- Will be required to successfully complete TTC’s in-house training relevant to this position.
Shifts
The TTC operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Therefore, students must be flexible and willing to work shift work, as all of the positions available involve working various shifts (morning, afternoon, nights), which may include working weekends and holidays.
