Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a Process Engineer having experience in the energy industry with keen interest and transferable skills to work on projects in the areas of conventional oil & gas, energy transition, renewable energy, and low-carbon initiatives.
As the Process Engineer , you will work on a variety of projects as a team member under the guidance of a Senior Process Engineer or Team Lead. Your primary role will be to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer certain processes, methodologies, or products for a project. You will perform various tasks, including simulations, calculations, and support fieldwork.
The projects that the Process Engineer will be assigned to may have complex features that will require the application of good engineering knowledge, and both critical and creative thinking. The successful candidate should have experience in any of the areas of oil and gas (upstream, midstream, or downstream), energy transition, renewable energy, and low-carbon initiatives, chemical, petrochemical, or industrial process design. The projects would comprise pre-feasibility studies, feasibility studies, FEED, and or detailed design/ engineering phases of execution.
Your Key Responsibilities
Under the direction of a Senior Process Engineer or Team Lead, the Process Engineer will assist with engineering design activities for projects of various sizes and complexity. Complete the tasks as assigned by the Senior Process Engineer or Team Lead in a timely, thorough, and organized manner. Peer review of deliverables created by other process engineers may also be required.
- Complete various tasks in a timely, thorough, and organized manner. The tasks may include, but are not limited to:
- Development of process simulations using Aspen HYSYS including Aspen Flare Analyzer and Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (EDR) , Process Symmetry, ProMax, and/or any other industry simulation software
- Development of engineering drawings such as BFDs, PFDs, and P&IDs
- Carry out process studies/analyses, and provide recommendations for new and existing installations including adequacy checks and evaluation of new and/or existing equipment
- Process sizing calculations for equipment, lines (piping hydraulics), and instrumentation
- Generation and documentation of simulation, study reports and calculations performed
- Carry out PSV sizing and support ORA (overpressure risk assessment)
- Contribute to the development of documents such as heat and material balance tables, equipment datasheets, instrumentation datasheets, line designation tables, PSV lists, cause and effect diagrams (shutdown keys), set point lists, car seal lists, process design basis/criteria, design basis memorandum, and operating /control philosophies
- Participate in P&ID reviews, design reviews, and process safety reviews as required
- Perform fieldwork necessary to gather data, check tie-ins and provide home-office construction and commissioning support
- Collaborate with other Stantec peers - process team members, other engineering disciplines, and project stakeholders to deliver quality products to Stantec clients
- Meet all requirements of the Client and Stantec Quality and Safety requirements. Ensure appropriate reference material is always utilized
- Client interface – Establish and maintain positive client relationships. Carry out discussions and presentations, as required
- Be familiar with applicable industry codes and regulations and ensure appropriate industry-accepted methods are used for work
- Maintaining good standing with APEGA and compliance with the ethical obligations
- Strengthen technical knowledge through on-the-job, informal, and formal training
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Good knowledge of process engineering design for conventional oil & gas, gas plants and liquids handling facilities, Renewable Energy - carbon capture, Hydrogen, Oil Sands and SAGD facilities, or refineries
- Strong experience in using simulation software (Aspen - HYSYS, Process Symmetry, PROMAX, etc.)
- Good knowledge of piping hydraulics and line sizing
- Good experience with hydraulic software such as AFT (Fathom, Arrow, Impulse) or any other comparable facility hydraulics software
- Reasonable experience with Aspen Flare Analyzer and Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (EDR)
- Familiarity or experience with hydraulic software (Synergi Pipeline Simulators - SPS) would be an asset but is not essential.
- Sound experience with the development and checking of BFDs, PFDs, and P&IDs. The ability to read piping isometrics and piping plans would be an asset
- Strong experience with some process calculations including equipment and PSV sizing, and a reasonable degree of skill with Microsoft Excel.
- Organizing and checking of documentation including but not limited to P&IDs, data sheets, and reports
- Knowledge of design standards, guidelines, and applicable legislations (Canadian, API standards, AER directives, etc.) i.e., familiarity with applicable industry codes and regulations
- Solid understanding of project life cycle and experience in working for different project stages from concept design to detailed engineering
- Experience in working with electronic markup software, such as Bluebeam Revu or any other equivalent software.

- Strong written and excellent oral communication skills (English) and be able to clearly present and explain technical terms
- Be an effective team contributor with the ability to work independently when required
- Be self-motivated, eager to learn and grow and be accountable
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering. About 4 – 7 years of experience.
- Registered with APEGA (as EIT or P. Eng).
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
