The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) will screen patients in the neonatal intensive care unit for eligibility for (up to 5) research studies, coordinate with clinical team caring for the patient to understand suitability of timing to approach for consent, describe research studies and be able to answer questions in context of clinical situation of the patient, and keep track of patients who have and have not consented for research. They will liaise with medical team looking after patient during conduct of study and aid in conduct of research-related procedures - including but not limited to set-up of research equipment and will be responsible for data entry, basic analysis and oversight/management of research progress. Finally, the CRN will be responsible for keeping study related files, documents and supplies up-to-date and in stock, including maintenance of research ethics board approval and will work collaboratively with the research team, including other research coordinator(s).

Job Summary:

Under direction of the research coordinator and/or principal investigator, the Clinical Research Nurse is responsible for collecting data for a pre-established research study from patients in various settings.

Purpose and Key Functions:

• Interview and assess patients to determine eligibility for participation in the research study.
• Inform patient and family about study protocols and procedures.
• Follow prescribed research methodology to ensure all research material is handled in accordance with established protocols, policies, and procedures.
• Conduct and process study specific health assessments of patients and ensure accurate collection of relevant data. 
• Document and maintain patient consult notes, assessments, drug accountability logs, charts, and histories on each patient.
• Overall management of progress of research studies they are responsible for, in conjunction with the study PI.

Requirements:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
• Must be registered and maintain annual registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse.

Experience:

• Previous experience in the clinical area and knowledge of research principles and practices.

Additional Information:

• To have experience with clinical bedside care of preterm neonates (minimum 3 years as a front-line healthcare provider in a tertiary level NICU).
• Have experience of communication with families of preterm neonates around essential clinical care.
• Have availability to come in at flexible hours throughout the week (Mon-Fri) as needed when eligible babies are admitted. Should have availability during business hours Monday-Friday between 0800-1700, and occasionally on weekend if/as needed for short periods.
• Need to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (including written communication) that is timely and accountable.
• Preference given to candidates who possess basic knowledge of REDCap and Excel, with a focus on data entry and basic management/analysis.
