SUMMARY
As a member of Ciena’s Global Procurement Organization - Reporting to the Vice President of Global Procurement, the Sr. Director of Procurement – EMS & Direct Material Supply is responsible for creating, challenging, and driving the execution of the supply & commercial strategy, driving optimum performance and the lowest total cost of ownership of component & purchased finished goods supply and EMS commercial landscape.
The Sr. Director of Procurement - EMS & Direct Material Supply is a strategic business partner, interfacing at all levels within the company, applying their expertise with data driven analysis on the strategic directional improvements of contract manufacturing commercials and component supply; collaborating and aligning with leaders of product manufacturing, supply planning, inventory management, distribution management, and supplier management. This role will continually provide value through the ongoing examination and data-driven recommended enhancements to the EMS commercial & direct material supply/stocking models; with the objective of achieving the optimum performance, balanced risk, and lowest total cost models for Ciena.
You must have the ability to quickly translate changing business and supply/market dynamics into enhancements or modifications to the commercial and material supply/stocking strategy. Key focus will be driving continuous improvement of the commercial teams and our partners.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop ODM sourcing strategy aligned with Product-line specifications, R&D make vs buy, cost, and geo footprint requirements.
- Partner and collaborate with Inventory Management, Supply Planning, and Commodity Management to revamp Vendor Managed Inventory models and corresponding commercial agreements.
- Partner closely with manufacturing peers to co-create the EMS sourcing strategy ensuring commercial agreements align with product line, partner capabilities/performance, and regional sourcing and order fulfillment objectives.
- Establish and monitor the component and purchased finished goods supply strategies to ensure overhead optimization, operational simplification, and lowest total end-to-end cost.
- Modernize the commercial models with our EMS and ODM partners to optimize the financial dynamics of the working relationship and reduce risk and the total cost of doing business.
- Drive strategic enhancements to the component supply models through aligning inventory, cost, efficiency, visibility, and risk objectives.
- Driving end-to-end lowest total cost of ownership of material flowing through the component supply chain from component suppliers, through Ciena’s third party component distribution partners and supplier managed inventory hubs, and to/through contract manufacturers and direct order fulfillment centers. This is to be accomplished by ensuring the right model/fit and agreements are in place to enable the objectives and corresponding processes are put in place to track and drive adherence.
- Ensure continuity of supply and proper inventory velocity for all components that are managed by the third-party component distribution partners, EMS partners, and VMI programs; ensuring partners are driving the correct demand signals with purchase order coverage to suppliers and the corresponding supply schedule aligns with Ciena demand and stocking requirements. Establish processes for engagement to ensure tight alignment between supply and demand and there are early indicators built-in to trigger supply misalignment to demand and stocking objectives.
- Responsible for contract manufacturing commercial relationships and ensuring lowest TCO and supplier performance. This will be accomplished through tight collaboration and alignment with product operation leaders and finance to align goals and establish balanced commercial operational models ( and terms of doing business) that accounts for cost management, manufacturing performance, material sourcing, inventory carrying, MRP/data visibility, quarterly settlement governance, process performance related to their execution of publishing prices, settlement forecasting, accuracy of PO coverage to suppliers, and other critical operational processes.
- Oversee teams responsible for relationships and performance improvement of component distribution partners, contract manufacturers and OEM partners, in part, by ensuring the right metric input to quarterly business reviews.
- Strengthen relationships and alignment with these partners through establishing and orchestrating regular executive business reviews to discuss business outlooks, strategic initiatives, and areas of improvement that require executive-level awareness/support.
- Establish metrics for tracking and reporting internal performance of your area and team.
- Drive and mentor staff in long-term vision and strategic planning efforts for continuous improvement.
- Ready and support team in negotiations of new commercial agreements aligned with updated strategic commercials objectives.
- Hire, develop, motivate, and retain high-performing staff. Provide guidance on assigned activities and ensure follow-through on assigned tasks and projects. Evaluate performance and provide guidance and/or recognition.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, supply chain, organizational management, or engineering
- 15+ years of experience in advancing procurement or supply chains roles: including strategic sourcing, contract management, and functions responsible for influencing business strategy, supplier relations, and operating models.
- Strong understanding of financial statements and the operational day-to-day items that can impact them.
- Experience in management and leading cross divisional teams
- Extensive experience working with or at contract manufacturers, ODMs, or OEMs in areas of business and commercial management
- Superior negotiation skills developed through extensive sourcing and supplier relationship management experience
- Experience writing/generating RFx to suppliers and leading teams in complex RFx projects and corresponding award contracts
- Excellent quantitative, analytical and project management skills
- Strong influencing skills that can be used to lead teams and build partnerships with internal resources and supply base
Preferred:
- Master’s Degree in business, finance, or supply chain
The annual pay range for this position is $168,900 - $280,600 CAD.
Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
