We are thrilled to announce the expansion of Good Shepherd Centres with the opening of a new floor at the Cathedral dedicated to our Men's Centre. This exciting addition will support 50 beds, providing a safe and welcoming environment for men and gender-diverse individuals impacted by homelessness.
At Good Shepherd, we believe in offering more than just shelter; we strive to provide our clients with the support they need to thrive. Our new centre will feature nourishing nutrition, offering a variety of snacks tailored to diverse dietary needs and customs, along with warm beverages and a nutritious breakfast. The space will be equipped with essential amenities, including washroom and shower facilities, secure storage for personal belongings, and security cameras to ensure safety.
Good Shepherd follows a harm reduction approach in its client services, ensuring our facility is equipped with sharps containers and other harm reduction supplies and resources.
As we embark on this significant expansion, Good Shepherd is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a Shelter Support Worker for 50 shelter beds at Old Cathedral Highschool-378 Main St E.
How You Will Make an Impact
Good Shepherd Is responding to the increased need for emergency shelter. We are in looking for candidates that have a demonstrated commitment to the mission values of hospitality, availability, responsibility, adaptability, quality and dignity with a demonstrated knowledge of issues related to poverty, homelessness, mental illness, substance use/addictions and developmental disabilities.
- Provide emergency shelter to unhoused male identified individuals
- Provide support in a residential setting using Housing First Principles
- Demonstrate professionalism and excellent communication skills
- Responsibilities will include direct client contact in all aspects of service necessary for the comfort and safety of individuals accessing shelter services
- Ability to carry own caseload and work within a client-centred perspective
- Possess a working knowledge of issues related to gender-based violence, trauma, homelessness, mental health and substance use
- Work from a trauma-informed, anti-racist, anti-oppressive and feminist framework
- Experience supporting the development of personalized counseling plans and maintaining a caseload is required
What You'll Bring to Our Team
- A post-secondary education in a social service/related field or lived experience working with vulnerable individuals
- Good knowledge of social service agencies and community resources
- Have a strong understanding of harm reduction principles
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, good organization skills and ability to prioritize workload
- A valid C.P.R. certification
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Computer literacy including: Word, Excel
- Committed to anti-racist/anti-oppressive practice and to the mission and values of Good Shepherd Centre's.
- Fluency in a language in addition to English is an asset
- Demonstrated understanding of workplace health and safety practices and understanding of an employee's responsibility under current legislation
