EPCOR’s Water Services, Customer Operations group has a full-time permanent opportunity for a Control Systems Engineer to join the Controls & Automation Engineering team working out of the Aurum site in Edmonton, AB.

In the Control Systems Engineer role you will be accountable for performance of the duties required to install and support Controls and SCADA systems, which includes estimation, design, support and preventative maintenance tasks while achieving the required outcomes with time spans up to 12 months. You are also accountable for the management of Controls and SCADA projects in the wastewater collection system by executing capital projects based upon sound management processes. This includes ensuring accurate and timely delivery of project plans, accurate cost estimation and budget adherence, and observing safety and achieving the required outcomes with time spans up 12 months.
What you’d be responsible for
You are accountable to the WWS Systems Control and Integration Manager and will have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these):
- Providing input to the Controls and SCADA systems plans and directions, ensuring an appropriate understanding of the EPCOR Utilities Inc. (EUI), Controls and SCADA systems strategy throughout the WWS Systems Control and Integration team and ensure on-going effective positioning and appropriate relationships between other positions in the WWS Systems Control and Integration group and in the rest of EUI.
- Developing and implementing level appropriate deliverables within the context of the WWS Systems Control and Integration business plan.
- Identifying the necessary budget requirements for the provision of:
- Services and the estimation and delivery of Controls and SCADA projects.
- Controls and SCADA projects including engineering and construction
- Ensuring:
- The delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics. This will require the delivery of projects and support tasks within the estimated cost and schedule to meet customer requirements
- optimal deliverables through effective cross-functional accountability and authority practices within Senior Manager’s context and prescribed limits.
- Developing, implementing and reviewing Controls and SCADA engineering processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements and ensure mitigation of risks. This includes conformance to all requirements of the EPCOR Professional Practice Management Plan
- Providing successful design and implementation of new Controls and SCADA systems including:
- project estimation
- project specification
- project management
- equipment specification and purchase, including electrical, instrumentation, controls, and communications
- PLC logic programming design
- loop and engineering drawings
- I/O lists
- control philosophies and narratives
- identification of alarm points and development of strategy
- HMI system configuration
- screen configuration
- implementation and operation of back-up systems
- creation of alarm points and strategy
- generation of trend points and strategy
- testing and commissioning
- Providing support for troubleshooting of Controls and SCADA systems that are currently in operation by:
- diagnosing and resolving system failures
- making modifications to existing systems without impacting operations
- recommending modifications to existing systems without impacting operations
- suggesting improvements to existing systems
- attending training and ensuring system knowledge is kept current
- In the identified areas of technical expertise, providing training to more junior staff, input to technological decisions for the department and recommendations for new approaches and procedures
- Providing input to the Manager for completion of personnel functions for other Engineering staff.
What’s required to be successful
Qualifications, experience and behaviours you possess are:
- Completion of a degree in Engineering or Computer Science from a recognized post-secondary educational institute.
- Professional recognition by an approved authority such as a P.Eng through APEGA.
- Experience that includes:
- Five (5) or more years with related engineering.
- All phases of Project Management form initiation to close-out.
- Development and execution of engineering projects and project management.
- Solid understanding of:
- PLC software and computer systems
- HMI and SCADA system components
- Ability to provide professional stamping of drawings when required.
- Demonstrable above average computer skills.
