Job Summary
Under general direction of the Mgr Transit Maintenance: designs, develops, implements and evaluates formal and informal in-house training programs and coordinates and oversees outside training providers for all Bus Maintenance Department employees. This position is responsible for maintaining and updating the department’s technical publications library and preventive maintenance inspection programs and documentation. The Maintenance Trainer is frequently called upon to research and make recommendations regarding fleet technical issues and to perform on-job training and mentoring of junior mechanics and apprentices. This position will be required to work modified hours per day, change shifts and/or days off in order to perform the required training on an as needed basis
Duties and Responsibilities
- On-Boarding new MiWay Transit employees
- Design, prepare and conduct training orientations, training courses and workshops to ensure staff receives appropriate training as required to ensure legislative compliance as well as improve and maintain driver-operator knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Plans and delivers Technical training programs related to work standards, processes, and production control systems Coach Technicians/ Apprentice CT’s,/ Mechanic Helpers, GSP’s &/ Supervisors
- Coaching and guidance to prepare apprentices for the Certificate of Qualification (CofQ) exam
- Respond to, investigate and review all staff motorized incidents as required. Conduct personal interviews, recommend corrective action and maintain related hard copy and data based records.
- Conducts inspections and assists with the investigation and resolution of safety issues, including: Performing site inspections and conducting random quality control checks on preventative maintenance and repairs; recommends retraining arising out of inspection report results.
- Assists with investigating the cause of major mechanical failures and determining the best course of remedial action; conducts root cause analysis to determine the cause of malfunctions, and recommends procedural improvements to prevent further incidents.
- Research, develop, recommend and implement appropriate fleet training and compliance policies and procedures to improve compliance and service.
- Assist in the development of internal systems to track staff training records and ensure compliance.
- Assists with maintenance of updated content for the web site and the technical resource library of services, parts, and repair manuals for all vehicles maintained at MiWay Transit Bus Garages
- Reviews incident reports and claims to determine corrective actions for work standards and training
- Maintains legal files and records relative to employee qualifications required by MTO, MOE, and other regulatory and legislative bodies
- Research fleet technical issues and make recommendations for corrective action
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate action on manufacturer technical service bulletins for Transit Division vehicles and equipment
- Conducts inspections and assists with the investigation and resolution of safety issues, including:

- Conducts pilot modifications to the bus fleet, tests modifications, once complete, and writes up procedures for distribution and commencement of fleet wide programs.
- Updates and tracks Diagnostic laptops and software, ensuring all laptops are up to date
Skills and Qualifications
Completion of secondary school with additional vocational or technical training, ideally in the adult training model – or any combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent. Having C. Tech or C.E.T. Credentials would be an asset
- Minimum four (4) years’ experience delivering training
- Certifications or Designations: Completion of a training and apprenticeship program in Automotive Service Technicians (310S) would be an asset / a Truck & Coach Technicians (310T) is mandatory
- Shall be able to obtain and maintain a B or C/Z license in good standing
- Knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and related legislation including Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR), and other legislative and/or regulatory requirements to facilitate the safe operation of MiWay Transit bus fleet maintenance.
- Principles, methods, tools and materials used in Bus repair
- Experience with creating, administering, and delivering adult training programs, including: facilitating classroom instruction, conducting training needs assessment, and evaluating training programs
- Leadership abilities to coach and guide Coach Technicians/ Apprentice CT’s,/ Mechanic Helpers, GSP’s &/Supervisors
- Interpersonal, diplomacy, oral/written/presentation skills to monitor and deliver training programs
- Work inside and outside in all weather conditions. Working around fumes, odors and dust in an occasionally high-noise environment, with appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Shall be able to work and travel various shifts and locations.
- Must possess a valid passport to travel.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 86,858.00 - $ 115,812.00
