Main Purpose & Function
The Truck Driver II operates a single axle dump truck (4.5 to 7 cubic yard, standard or automatic transmission) and must abide by all driving policies and procedures in accordance with the City of Vancouver, BC Commercial Transport Act, and BC Motor Vehicle Act.
The successful candidate will need to be fit tested for respirators as operationally required.
The successful candidate must be able to work 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts as operationally required.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Towing a trailer or compressor under 2600 kg in weight
- Transports Essick roller to and from work yards and worksites as operationally required.
- Operating snow and ice control attachments in adverse weather conditions including but not limited tosnowplow, salt/sand spreader, and salt brine sprayer attachments.
- Supervises the loading and unloading of trucks, and may supervise one or more co-workers engaged inunloading tasks as required.
- Performs daily safety inspections of the vehicle and completes accurate pre/post trips.
- Washes, cleans, services and makes minor repairs to trucks as required.
- Performs other related labouring duties in maintenance and construction activities such as spot salting,shoveling, form setting, hand loading trucks, operating small equipment and related work as required.
- Operates the two-way radio for job related activities using proper, brief and concise radio procedures.
- As a representative of the City, deals with the public in an effective, courteous and respectful manner.
- As a member of the Streets work group, the Truck Driver II must be able to understand and effectively carryout verbal and written instructions in order to direct co-workers in a variety of tasks.
- Keep accurate time cards or written records such as spot salting locations, complaint forms and other dailywork performed.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Grade 8 or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Minimum of 6 months' (1040 hours) experience as a Truck Driver II (single axle dump truck, 4.5 to 7 cubicyard, standard or automatic transmission) and/or as a Truck Driver III (tandem axle dump truck, 9 to 12 cubic yard, standard or automatic transmission) within the last 3 years, and currently on the Streets Operations Truck Driver II spare list or training and experience in an equivalent classification of vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and of the precautions to avoid accidents in operatingheavy-duty trucks and auxiliary or attached equipment and demonstrated ability to work safely on the job.
- Knowledge of the method and procedures used in transporting heavy materials and equipment.
- Knowledge and ability to adhere to load securement practices.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude to ensure equipment is operating properly, and report mechanical issues.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills sufficient to perform the posted duties effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to operate heavy-duty trucks with attached or auxiliary equipment safely and effectively under difficult driving conditions and other skills applicable to the job.
- Demonstrated ability to learn the requirements of the job in a reasonable amount of time.
- Demonstrated ability to assist crew(s) with all work functions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to create and maintain a functional team
- and cooperative environment among staff and the public.
- Demonstrated satisfactory work habits over the last three years.
Driver’s License and Record Checks
* A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with Air Brakes or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
- 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
- 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
- Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
