Who we are
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.
The Opportunity
The Training Developer and Advisor is responsible for preparing and delivering internal and external engagement and training products and services for arket participants and other stakeholders in support of the IESO’s strategic initiatives, policies, and programs. The Advisor will support the design of training course materials that integrate various training environments (e.g., eLearning, instructor-led, self-directed learning, etc.) and contribute to the resolution of training-related issues. They will also support opportunities to develop partnerships and stakeholder alignment that enhance the IESO’s Training Academy and create training opportunities. Under direction, the Advisor will undertake analysis to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of training materials and support the coordination and delivery of relevant and timely training products and solutions.
The Training Developer and Advisor is responsible for ensuring that the IESO is perceived as a trusted advisor in all interactions conducted by the training team. They will be relied upon to act as a customer experience and training advocate in internal project teams, ensuring that customer feedback is considered and responded to appropriately.
What You’ll Do
- Support the Sr. Training Lead in undertaking training activities, including preparing materials and coordination of information and schedules with other Business Units, and execution of adult e-learning tools.
- Assist in preparing and distributing written communications to broad audiences of customers and stakeholders including communications on benefits of IESO’s Training Academy and aligns with IESO External Relations Engagement Principles.
- Undertake research on new tools and training methods to support the successful engagement and delivery of training to various stakeholders. Propose solutions and options on training development and adult learning approaches to Sr. Training Lead and Management.
- Manage materials and coordinate attendance at training events as well as e-learning data analysis. Work and interact with external and internal stakeholders through written communications, or in webinars/meetings to resolve issues, provide clarifications or facilitate meetings.
- Document outreach and training initiatives; develop and maintain a database/spreadsheet of contacts for stakeholders, training data analytics, and customer experience.
- Identify existing or potential issues either noted by stakeholders, the team or through daily work, and raising them to appropriate channels.
- Identify and develop training/education material and requirements. Assist in the development and delivery to relevant customer and stakeholder groups as required. (e.g. public information sessions, website enhancements, training material). Assist in preparing assigned products such as briefing notes, written communications, presentations, training, process documentation, etc.
- Undertake development and maintenance of training materials for market participants and other stakeholder’s consumption for individual and/or group settings (eg. Training objectives, experimental learning plans and multi-learning environment lesson plans, presentation materials, practical exercises, job aids, evaluations and feedback surveys);
- Participate on IESO project teams as the training representative to ensure that customer and stakeholder feedback is considered and incorporated in project design and implementation.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to Market Participants and others regarding the technical, economic and legislative parameters governing the energy industry and the marketplace, including the market regulations, design, rules, obligations and processes. Respond/consult accordingly and where appropriate, seek subject matter expert advice.
- Maintain expert market knowledge consistent with corporate strategic direction (e.g. market operation issues, market rules, IESO business processes) as well as adult learning environments and approaches. Provide customers and other IESO staff with updates, interpretations and training impacts.
- Provide advice on regularly evaluate program effectiveness by observing course deliveries, obtaining feedback, reviewing course materials, and making continuous improvements.
- Support development of and execute mechanisms to evaluate training initiatives and integrate feedback into future training materials Maintain and distribute monthly reporting of training activities.
- Develop modern methodologies and stay current with tools used in market and system operation, conservation initiatives and other programs; support the rollout of change initiatives (eg. New tools, market enhancements, participation, programs, etc.);
- On an ongoing basis, support the review of the effectiveness of existing processes and recommend changes to training processes, systems, procedures and market documents as necessary. Propose and identify information and reporting requirements as required.
What you need to succeed
- Successful completion of a 4-year University education in the appropriate field/discipline; or equivalent experience and education in business, commerce, accounting, or engineering to understand and apply the technical/economic legislative parameters governing the energy industry and market place.
- Knowledge of power systems and the Ontario market and system operations.
- Extensive knowledge of policies, practices, and procedures for effective communication to customers in relation to inquiries, advice and guidance on market participant obligations.
- Oral and written fluency in English to communicate effectively, instruct with clarity, and prepare cogent training manuals and reports.
- Knowledge in the development of effective training material which includes in-person course delivery and training material such as training guides and e-Learning platforms.
- Experience in methods of discovery, investigation, training design,and process design, which involves having good analytical, reasoning and negotiating skills to resolve unique market related problems or questions.
- Experience in a variety of training and/or engagement activities and working with externals communities, customers and/or stakeholders. Requires familiarity with the IESO organization, its engagement principles and their application and intent. Capability to write and create content for training on multiple mediums such as e-learning tools or in-person instruction and communication in multiple mediums such as email, website and briefing notes.
- Requires a series of developmental needs to meet the practical knowledge demands of the job:
- In-depth knowledge of market rules and manuals.
- Knowledge of a variety of learning environments, instructional design, and tools/processes used in market and system operation.
- Knowledge of the duties, responsibilities and obligations of market participants regarding market and system operations.
- Knowledge of the functions of generation and transmission electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of evaluation strategies that measure the effectiveness of both traditional and contemporary course materials.
- Strong communicator and influencer capable of translating complex policies, rules and concepts for a wide variety of audiences and market participants.
- Experience in the successful design, development, evaluation of training programs/courses and the assessment and recommendations of training requirements and related solutions.
- A period of over 6 years, up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario . When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga, Toronto, or Oakville location.
