The MLA is primarily responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate and efficient collection of patient specimens from the initial greeting of the patient, data entry, phlebotomy, ECGs or Holters, to the final preparation of specimens for transportation. The MLA is also responsible for performing related tasks tokeep the PSC in operational order. Float MLAs provide backup to regularly scheduled MLAs and Mobile Lab Service MLAs as required. In addition, the MLA provides input to the Team Supervisor concerning teamissues and opportunities for improvement. Key Responsibilities: • Greets patients upon arrival at the lab, reviews requisitions for accuracy, requests information as required from patients, determines if patients have followed necessary test preparation protocol prior to specimen collection and provides instruction to patients regarding the specimen collection process. • Enters into computer required patient demographics, requisition information and any additional information related to the processing of test results. • Performs phlebotomies, connects/disconnects Holter monitors and performs ECG tracings; alerts physicians of critical ECG values. • Performs special test collection i.e. medical/legal drug screens, paternity test, clinical trials and completes all related documentation, as required. • Performs tasks in accordance with standard operating procedures. • Receives, sorts and processes incoming specimens from physician offices. • Troubleshoots, problem solves and investigates incidents relating to missing specimens or other specimen concerns. • Spins blood, separates serum, sorts by department as required. • Measures 24-hour urine collections and pours off urine specimens. • Prepares supplies for shipment to doctors’ offices. • Prepares specimens for pickup by couriers in accordance with packaging requirements and within the time deadlines. • Maintains liaison with doctors’ offices: advises of changes in procedures or operations, responds to routine inquiries; follows up on any requests or problems and reports problems to Team Supervisor • Maintains adequate stock of supplies for PSC and orders as required. • Performs and documents routine equipment maintenance and quality control in accordance with established procedures; initiates corrective action as required • Prepares time sheets, maintains manuals and other related files. • Reports building maintenance problems to Team Supervisor or Manager of Facility Services as required. • Maintains confidentiality involving any information made available directly or indirectly about clients including physicians, patients, employees and the company. • Observes and executes all laboratory safety and security policies and regulations; including location and use of safety equipment, evacuation routes, disposal of contaminated material. • Maintains knowledge of safety/WHMIS and TDG procedures. • Trains and orients of all team members. • Assists in problem solving related to workflow and PSC organization and provides input, as required, at team meetings. • Performs assigned testing preparation and support procedures and other test related activities asrequired. • Participants in related team functions (i.e. team meetings, special projects, problem solving and decision making.) • Performs other related duties as required. Skills/Qualifications: • High school graduation and recent (within past 5 years) completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent recent (within past 5 years) or an equivalent combination of recent (within past 5 years) education and experience. • Recent (within past 5 years) ECG training or experience required. • A minimum of 2 years experience as a MLA. • Keyboarding skills with a minimum 40 wpm • Ability to relate to patients and doctors often in stressful situations • Valid and Class 5 BC Driver’s license with a good driving recordAs a caring and customer driven organization, LifeLabs is committed to providing inclusive, barrier free services and workplaces.
