Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Projects, the Study Director (AAEP Red Dog Mine - Aktigiruq & Anarraaq Extension Program) is accountable for leading and directing Teck’s AAEP early-stage studies (prefeasibility), working in collaboration with, and on behalf of, Teck’s business units to shape the project and inform sound commercial decisions. The Study Director will perform their duties as Teck’s Projects Group service provider. The role includes significant interaction and collaboration with Teck’s executive leadership team. Essential skills include strategic thinking, business acumen, complex decision making, innovation, and strong representation.
Key accountabilities include: project safety and delivering quality plans, schedules, estimates, and documentation per Teck’s project development framework. The Study Director will be charged with leading a multi-disciplinary Owner team, EPCM services contractors and specialist consultants to deliver on the scope and collaborate with members of the asset management and leadership teams to develop, review and monitor quality management plans, HSEC plans, estimates, budgets, schedules, procurement plans, contracts and contracting plans. The Director will provide specific expertise in project strategy and site management and will need to constantly maintain and demonstrate Teck’s commitment to safety and environmental protection as a core value. The Study Director will also work closely with the social, environmental, and regulatory teams to support permitting requirements.
The position will be based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
Responsible for the overall delivery of the project within scope, budget and schedule aligned to the business case and the Teck values of safety and sustainability
Understand and champion the project's business case, and as necessary, assist the General Manager, Director of Studies and Steering Committee in defining and championing the project investment opportunity
Develop and maintain open and effective communications within the study team, internal Teck departments and external stakeholders
Set measurable objectives and goals for the Project team, including EPCM contractors, specialist contractors and consultants
Provide direction and management to achieve the project objectives as defined in the Project Charter and work collaboratively with the Asset General Manager, Director of Studies and the broader leadership team to deliver the objectives
Identify and manage (mitigate) project risks
Manage the project fully supporting corporate objectives and policies while being aware of corporate constraints that may affect the project
Manage the project in full compliance of regulatory requirements, i.e., specific permit conditions and statutory requirements; and where permits are not yet issued, represent the project’s interests in submissions made to regulators with the Asset management team
Set up, direct and control the project team collaboratively with functional leadership as required to achieve the project objectives
Establish effective communications with the Steering Committee and other stakeholders to define reporting and communication requirements
Monitor project progress while maintaining awareness of material risks and opportunities; make timely decisions to mitigate risk and seize opportunities
Author and contribute to study reports
Ideal candidate with over 20 years of experience in mining-specific projects' early study phases
Experience within the Copper and/or Coal industry is a strong preference but not a must
Experience in all phases of projects, from concept through implementation, is preferred
Operating experience is a preference but not required
Project Development Experience
The ideal candidate will have completed at least one project cycle from start to finish
Demonstrated ability to partner with and bring together cross-functional groups to manage early study phase deliverables and build long-standing relationships successfully
The ability to act as a Qualified Person under Canadian regulations is desired
Stakeholder Management and License to Operate
Strong experience managing key stakeholder relationships, both internal and external, including corporate and executive communication, site operations, large construction contractors and vendors, Government and regulatory agencies and local communities
Solid foundation and experience in permitting and contemporary community relations practices and standards
Good working knowledge of relevant Canadian and Chilean legislation is a preference but not required

Salary Range: $172,000 - $213,000
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
