The Opportunity:

Positions available for engineering students wishing to work in the geotechnical/ construction materials engineering field.  Students will perform routine field and/ or laboratory materials testing, collect field samples of soils and construction materials and perform a wide variety of tests to determine acceptability of materials based on engineering properties.  The applicant must have good communication skills and detailed reporting skills.  Experience working on construction sites would be an asset to potential candidates.  Knowledge of asphalt pavement, Portland cement concrete and properties of soils would be beneficial, but not required.  Safety orientation and, on-the-job training, will be provided to successful candidates.

The student will learn and/ or build on the following transferable skills during the work term which will be applicable in their future careers:

  • Communication skills;
  • Problem solving and analytical thinking skills;
  • Time management (must be able to prioritize tasks);
  • Technical writing skills and detailed data reporting.

Work Term Outcomes:

  • Develop and improve construction job site skills;
  • Communication with engineers, clients, contractors, construction crews and traffic control;
  • Develop awareness of safety hazards on construction sites;
  • Learn basic principles for construction materials such as: hot mix asphalt, recycled asphalt, soil, and, concrete;
  • Obtain and understand results both in the laboratory setting and at the construction site;
  • Exposure to real-life engineering problems;
  • Work with field supervisor and/or senior technical personnel to solve pertinent project concerns relating to construction methods, material selection, mix proportions and mix design;
  • Technical Writing;
  • Engineers Nova Scotia (or applicable province) monthly Experience Records and Coop Final Work Term Report (if required).

A day in the life:

  • You will review and understand project specifications and test standards;
  • You will conduct laboratory and field tests and inspections and report test results for soils, concrete, and asphalt;
  • You will communicate effectively within the team environment, with engineers, clients, contractors, construction crews and traffic control;
  • You will calibrate, maintain, and repair testing equipment (as required);
  • You will adhere to all WSP and site health and safety programs, while developing awareness of safety hazards on construction sites.
