Student Assistant – Workshop and Production Labs Wilson School of Design
Department: Wilson School of Design
Reports to: Divisional Lab Coordinator
To assist with the maintenance of the Workshop and Production Labs in the Wilson School of Design. This position works closely with the lab technician, lab coordinator, faculty and students.
The student assistant helps to ensure the proper use of the workshop, lab spaces and equipment, and keeps materials stocked and organized. As needed, they will also ensure that safety protocol is being followed and that students are using the space in a respectful and collegiate manner.
Principle Duties:
- Helping students with basic operation of machine tools, 3D printers, and plotters. This may includeidentifying faulty equipment and asking for help, diagnosing problems with plotters and 3D printers, andchanging 3D printer filament when necessary.
- Oversee workshop safety, including clean up, turning off equipment, communicating with faculty and students about safe use of facilities, and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Clean and organize space and materials.
- Prepare samples and/or make prototypes.
- Assist Divisional Lab Coordinator, Lab Technician and Faculty with special projects such as setting up visual displays, providing tours to prospective students, assisting with basic fabrication tasks in the workshop, documenting design process and/or end product.
Requirements:
- Understanding of equipment and operation procedures
- Awareness of risks and hazards relating to the use of equipment
- A high level of proficiency and knowledge of the equipment in the WSD workshop
- Good knowledge of materials used in the workshop and production labs
- Good fabrication skills
- Strong organizational and self-management skills
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
This is part-time position during the Fall and Spring terms; not to exceed 15 hours/week.
