The Ministry of Agriculture works to promote an innovative, adaptive and globally competitive agri-foods sector for the benefit of all British Columbians. The Ministry’s support of healthy and safe agri-food and seafood production and post-production processing provides new and value-added products for domestic and international markets, contributing to B.C. jobs and the economy as well as to diversified rural communities. 

The Meat Hygiene & Agri-food Inspector provides slaughter inspection services in provincially licensed abattoirs. The position is responsible for ante and post-mortem inspections, determining whether livestock and meat products are fit for human consumption, and whether livestock are being treated humanely according to relevant legislation and provincial policies.

In addition to providing meat inspection services, the position provides other provincial agri-food inspection services as authorized. This position assists with reporting and provides ongoing contribution to the improvement of the provincial Agri-Food inspection system.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Training and experience working as a meat inspector in a slaughter establishment OR
  • Grade 12 education with training and experience in meat processing OR
  • A Diploma in animal science, veterinary technician, food science, or meat processing. 


  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, including working with repetitive motions.
  • If requested, provide medical confirmation of sensory ability related to sight, smell and touch.
  • Valid BC Driver’s license or equivalent.
  • May be required to use own vehicle on an expense paid basis. 
  • Overnight travel may be required.
