Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Financial Reporting Risk & Controls, the Senior Manager, Financial Reporting Risk & Controls will assist the Director with the management of HOOPP’s internal control over financial reporting (“ICFR”) program. This includes assisting with the development and/or enhancement of polices, guidelines and methodologies for the program. The Senior Manager is also responsible for providing consulting advice on controls to various areas in the organization and in reviewing and managing the testing performed by the Internal Audit department and the external auditors.
This role involves identifying, understanding, assessing, and documenting key controls over financial reporting and includes the identification, design and implementation of process improvements and internal control enhancement opportunities. On an ongoing basis, the position will be responsible for monitoring and assessing the effectiveness of internal controls, including IT General Controls (“ITGCs”). In addition, the Senior Manager will support the Director in leading and performing ad hoc project evaluations requested by the business partners (e.g., system implementations, process automation, etc.). This involves working closely with the various Finance, Plan Operations, Risk, HR and IT Departments, as well as external consultants, to provide the necessary oversight.
What you will do:
Assist the Director in leading the design, implementation and execution of a strategic and sustainable ICFR framework across HOOPP.
Assist the Director in performing the necessary research to develop and/or enhance polices, guidelines and methodologies for the program to stay on top of industry current innovations and best practices and apply them for HOOPP.
Oversee the identification and documentation of the key processes and controls, including business process controls, application controls, ITGCs, etc. and obtain an in depth understanding of the key risks and mitigating controls. This includes working with the various stakeholders across the organization to conduct walkthroughs and prepare and maintain detailed internal controls documentation (e.g., process narratives, risk and control narratives, process maps).
Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across the Finance, Plan Operations, Risk, HR and IT Divisions and maintain an in-depth understanding of key business and IT processes, including all key systems / applications, and serve as an expert on internal controls.
Leverage controls and risk expertise, along with business knowledge, to provide support to the Finance, Plan Operations, Risk, HR and IT Divisions by identifying potential areas of vulnerability and risk and working with the process owners to recommend internal control enhancement and process improvement opportunities and assist in the design and implementation of new internal controls, where required.
Lead the development and execution of ICFR test plans and work collaboratively with both the internal and external auditors, as applicable. Manage and maintain these relationships and resolve issues in a timely manner.
Perform quality reviews on the work performed by the ICFR testers and provide the necessary guidance on the testing methodology, as required.
Provide oversight on the management of remediation plans that result due to design and / or operating effectiveness deficiencies.
Develop communication channels with internal and external stakeholders and lead change through effective communication.
Assist the Director in managing and evaluating the ad hoc projects requested by the business partners to assess risk for existing and / or new Finance, Plan Operations and IT processes.
Participate in Finance and HOOPP wide projects, as required, and provide expertise with respect to ICFR requirements, including ITGCs.
Responsible for the review and analysis of System and Organization Control (SOC1 & SOC2) reports.
Responsible for the review of the quarterly ICFR attestation process and analyze the impact resulting from process and / or control changes.
Assist the Director with reporting to senior management and the Audit & Finance Committee.
Participate in the data cleansing, file organization and process enhancement for all ICFR documentation within HOOPP’s ICFR system, Workiva Wdesk.
Foster an enhanced compliance and risk culture by acting as an ambassador for the ICFR program and identifying opportunities for ongoing collaboration within the Finance, Plan Operations and IT Divisions.
Assist the Director in developing and facilitating education sessions to allow stakeholders to develop an understanding of the design and implementation of key controls for their area.
Lead change through effective communication and meaningful coaching, that will support the division’s long-term needs and goals and position the ICFR team as a valued asset.
What you bring:
University degree (Commerce, Accounting, Business Administration).
Chartered Accountant Designation (CPA, CA).
Other professional designations such as Certified Information Systems Auditor Designation (CISA), Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) considered an asset.
At least 6-10 years of progressive experience in external/internal audit, SOX 404/ NI 52-109 compliance and internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR), including IT risk and controls, in the financial services industry or public accounting with emphasis on pensions, private investments, real estate and capital markets.
A minimum of 2 years of management experience including leading a team.
Expert knowledge of SOX, NI 52-109 and governance and control frameworks (COSO and COBIT).
Expert knowledge on best practices for internal controls with a good understanding of information system risks and ITGCs and end user computing (EUC) controls.
Expert knowledge and experience in evaluating service organizations SOC1/SOC2 reports.
Knowledge of IT applications and systems such as Oracle, SAP, Power BI, AWS, and Microsoft Azure considered an asset.
In depth knowledge of capital market instruments (including fixed income, equity and derivative instruments and their processes) and private investments (including private equity, real estate and infrastructure and processes).
Knowledge of the pension industry and associated processes and controls.
Ability to identify, understand, document and monitor internal controls, critically assess the effectiveness of internal controls and make recommendations to improve internal controls, supporting front office, back office, middle office and finance functions.
Experience in the review and evaluation of controls for system implementations.
Strong knowledge of risk and compliance activities.
Ability to partner with and build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, such as the various business areas, external auditors, consultants, etc.
