Simulation Lab Technologist
Reporting to the Director, Simulation, Strategy, & Inter-Professional Learning, this position will be responsible for the daily operation of complex simulation apparatus; high, medium and low-fidelity mannequins, medical radiation diagnostic machines as well as PC's, simulation platforms and other medical simulation equipment at the SNP (Six Nations Polytechnic) campus and the IAHS (Institute for Applied Health Sciences at McMaster) campus.
The position will also support objectives specific to the mandate of SNP as an Indigenous Institute, and will work closely with the Manager of Health Services at SNP, while on site at SNP.
The incumbent will coordinate the set-up, use, and maintenance of all simulation and practice equipment within the simulation labs. This incumbent will also provide administrative support to facilitators and/or outside affiliates for sessions, train potential users on programming scenarios, set-up the simulation sessions, orient participants to the simulators, run simulation operations during sessions, and provide feedback to faculty. The incumbent will collaborate with the Simulation Technologist and implement recommendations to support faculty and students during practice, assessment and peer-to-peer situations. Administrative duties to support the Centre for Health Care Simulation including, but not limited to accreditation, procedures etc. will also be a focus of this incumbent, ensuring standards are clear, acknowledged, transparent, and actions/updates are implemented by way of communication and organizing working groups/committees/advisory teams which are struck to support ongoing and new initiatives.
Responsibilities:
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Technical Support
- Provide technical support in the use of computer-based multimedia systems and their components, including operation of digital cameras, video cameras, audio/video, Learning Space software, monitors, LCD projectors, and other related equipment.
- Assist faculty, instructors, staff and students in the use of a variety of simulator technologies, equipment, materials and supplies in an instructional setting, including creating skills videos using Kaltura.
- Program simulation scenarios: quizzes, pre and post encounters etc. and create student schedules using LearningSpace software.
- Program simulation scenarios for clinical skills exams, creating schedules of student circuits on LearningSpace software.
- Perform pre-simulation activities including powering up simulators, mannequins, patient monitors, AV equipment and other electronic equipment and test to ensure proper function prior to each simulation session. Program patient scenarios. Prepare mannequins as per the simulation scenario; including filling simulated blood and body fluid chambers, applying wounds and dressings, inserting tubes, using moulage. Stock patient rooms and equipment carts with supplies and equipment needed for specific simulation scenarios, including medications, doctors’ orders etc.
- Programs patient care simulators, prepares scenario props, and creates scenario moulage to model physiological responses to the clinical and skill objectives and specifications identified by academic programs.
- Serve as the simulation operator during educational sessions.
- Maintain a clean and safe learning lab environment, including sim room organization.
- Restores laboratory to pre-scenario conditions as required.
Administrative Support – Simulation/Procedural
- Evaluate new equipment and identify opportunities for technology improvement and integration into healthcare education by proactively seeking existing and emerging technologies including basic theory, design and implementation.
- Enters information into software management system for both simulator-based and standardized patient simulations.
- Train faculty, instructors and other Simulation Center staff in the operational aspects of simulation.
- Explains to learners the use of patient care simulators and related media and computer equipment.
- Create troubleshooting documents, simulator checklists, and preventative maintenance plans for simulation equipment.
- Collaborate as part of the inventory control team to ensure adequate supplies are available for upcoming labs and simulations.
- Ensures student compliance (and faculty awareness) with lab policies, procedures, and safety precautions.
- Arranges workshops, training sessions, lunch & learn simulations – advertise, set up and deliver.
Simulation and Simulated Learning
- Programming simulation computers with appropriate scenarios prior to simulation, organizing equipment, running computer during simulation and cleaning up environment post simulation.
- Working collaboratively with members of the lab inventory control team to ensure daily and weekly lab equipment and supplies are ready/prepared in advance for each lab course including supply drop-off and pick-up arrangements to a variety of rooms.
- Incumbent uses CAE management system and other technology to record simulations, saves digital recordings for faculty use and student review as required by the planned simulated activity.
- Incumbent collaborates with faculty to develop simulated activity, including use of low and high-fidelity mannequins.
- Incumbent prepares and cleans environment before and after simulated activity.
- Incumbent works with Simulation Centre Support Officer to maintain simulation and lab equipment.
- Incumbent works with IT and product vendors to problem-solve around equipment malfunction, or required upgrades.
- Provide support in the simulation lab for students and faculty to improve competencies and skills in meeting course objectives.
- Develops effective teaching and learning spaces within leaning management systems.
- Collaborates with administration, faculty and content experts to maintain competence with simulation systems.
- Coordinates/supports simulations at alternate sites as needed.
- Identifies, diagnoses and resolves problems for users of simulation software and hardware and communicates solutions to end-users.
- Provides suggestions for engineering solutions and custom requirements.
- Installs new equipment as required following appropriate vendor training.
- Coordinates preventative maintenance of all simulation and related equipment.
- Provides cost-effective alternative parts solutions in collaboration with Simulation Centre Support Officer.
- Maintains a variety of records related to simulation lab operations and equipment.
- Maintains and provides security for supplies, materials and equipment in the laboratory, stores, discards and rotates supplies and materials according to procedures.
- Maintains and updates simulation lab to include, but not limited to: identifying software, supply and equipment needs, monitoring simulation equipment, troubleshooting and resolving problems.
- Develops and maintains methods quality outcomes measurements to ensure client satisfaction with departmental programs, in collaboration with director and associate deans and any other metric as requested by director.
- Operates instructions media equipment such as video camera, multimedia computer systems and audio video distribution systems.
- Receives, sets up, and test new simulation and related multimedia and computer equipment as required.
Professional Development
- Makes self-aware of changes in healthcare, educational technology or new techniques by attendance at in service programs, vendors, tradeshows and conferences.
- Keeps aware of updates in simulation activity including equipment upgrades and new product development, new scenarios developed and innovation adaption of equipment to meet a variety of learning needs. Updates knowledge by noting changes in equipment or technology that are used in any health care setting and relates this information to faculty in addition, acts as a resource to faculty and other staff with skills and simulation techniques.
Maintenance
- Install new hardware and software on simulation equipment.
- Perform upgrades as necessary.
- Perform operational checks on equipment.
- Interface with the equipment manufacturers to troubleshoot system problems.
- Consult with IT technical support; oversee scheduled maintenance.
- Ensure warranties and service agreements re up to date arranging for preventative maintenance as required.
- Keep accurate records and logs of maintenance completed.
- Arrange for remediation and repair of simulation equipment when necessary.
Other duties
- Works with Simulation Centre Support Officer to ensure timely ordering of all supplies, equipment maintenance and upgrading required.
- Orients students, new faculty, new staff and visitors to the PPC.
- Participates in Campus Open Houses and similar events to showcase the simulation and health science labs.
- Works with faculty to develop multimedia to showcase lab and simulated learning activities across health sciences.
- Attends Simulation team meetings and all staff meetings.
- Assist with special projects and external events.
- Ensure learners complete confidentiality form and use of technology agreement and arrange for the scanning and archiving of them electronically as assigned.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:
- 4-year degree in Healthcare, Education with Health Care Minor Nursing, OT/PT, Cardiovascular, or Medical Imaging.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in health care, using knowledge of pharmacology, physiology, and medical terminology in a clinical setting.
- Minimum 2 years of experience with simulation; programming simulators, troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining, and creating moulage.
- Knowledge of Indigenous health, a general and current knowledge of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, contemporary issues, and cultural safety and experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organizations.
- Computer competency, Audio/Visual equipment, CAE LearningSpace Management System, MyCanvas, Laerdal Leap Software, Gaumard Uni, CAE Maestro & Muse, Wasp.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Excellent public speaking skills, communication skills both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
