NEW CAMPUS: In late 2024, OPG is establishing our new campus at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. The new campus will provide a cutting-edge work environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. The Energy Markets team, along with this position is not planned to move to the Oshawa campus before 2028.  

 

JOB OVERVIEW 

 

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Manager, Market Affairs located in Toronto, ON.

 

Reporting to the Director of Market Strategy, the Senior Manager, Market Affairs is responsible for the market affairs function, including OPG’s preparation for the IESO’s Market Renewal Program. 

 

Key accountabilities include managing a team, relationships with regulatory bodies, strategy and long-term planning.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES  

Market Monitoring: 

  • Monitor and keep OPG staff informed of ongoing and future market developments. 

  • Develop OPG's position on market evolution issues through collaborative internal discussions. 

  • Advocate externally for market rule changes beneficial to OPG through participation in all relevant IESO stakeholder forums by voicing persuasive arguments both orally and through written submissions. 

  • Provide market rule related advice to senior OPG members on advisory committees of the IESO, OPA, OEB and Ministry of Energy. 

  • Develop and maintain after-the-fact analyses on OPG's activity in the IESO markets and seek out opportunities to enhance OPG profits. 

 

Regulatory and Business Planning Support: 

  • For OPG's OEB rate hearings, coordinate and provide support for activity from Integrated Revenue Planning, Electricity Sales & Trading and Commercial Contracts. Involves development of evidence strategy, technical studies, evidence prep, witness prep, handle interrogatories and undertakings. 

  • Coordinate preparation of the Business Plan for each division within CO as per guidelines from Finance. Provide input on key future initiatives for presentation to CEO/CFO. 

  • Assist in the development of Energy Markets Scorecard - coordinate development of measures, track results on a bimonthly basis, do a yearend write up summarizing actual results and proposing scores where required. 

 

 EDUCATION 

  • Bachelor’s degree 

  • PMP (Project Management Professional) certification would be an asset 

  

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Deep understanding and experience with the IESO administered market and the northeast power markets 

  • Familiarity with the IESO’s Market Renewal Program 

  • Demonstrated experience in managing all aspects of transformational projects across the enterprise 

  • Strong people leadership and communication skills are essential. Must be able to lead a team effectively, provide guidance and foster collaboration among various stakeholders. 

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, experience building relationships with regulatory bodies 

  • Ability to work well with cross-functional teams including Energy Markets, Business Development, Commercial Operations and Strategy
