General Accountability
Manages the mechanical maintenance engineering activities and duties related to the design, development, maintenance repair and testing of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment associated with the TTC’s buildings, facilities and related equipment. This involves investigating and diagnosing complex engineering problems and making recommendations, preparing and modifying technical specifications, conducting inspections and/or testing, compiling reports, and managing projects. The role takes professional responsibility for mechanical design work as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO). The role also works with and coordinates the work performed by external agencies in an effort to solve complex technical problems that may arise.
Key Job Functions
- Prepare drawings, contract documents and specifications for equipment installations in existing buildings and based on appropriate mechanical design criteria;
- Provide approval of design drawings and actual construction for Building Permits, as a Professional Engineer;
- Investigate and diagnose complex engineering problems and recommend cost effective solutions.
- Contribute to the development of TTC design standards for mechanical equipment and maintenance procedures;
- Coordinate mechanical designs with staff from the architectural, electrical and structural disciplines in accordance with the Ontario Building Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant standards;
- Liaise with operational departments regarding issues with existing mechanical equipment and to investigate causes;
- Co-ordinate testing activities with maintenance trades and make recommendations for repairs or improvements, and assist in the development of long-term capital repair or replacement programs;
- Review designs, drawings and specifications for quality of design, adherence to TTC design standards and maintainability;
- Review proposals, design drawings, shop drawings and specifications received from developers and contractors pertaining to construction adjacent and/or connecting to TTC facilities;
- Arrange for or conduct inspections or measurements, prepare new and/or modify existing technical specifications and test procedures, coordinate and supervise testing and perform failure analysis and other studies.
- Inspect, assess and prepare engineering details for the modification and rehabilitation of existing systems, equipment, structures, etc. to ensure acceptable standards of performance and reliability.
- Prepare, review and approve estimates, material lists, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures, schedules and designs related to assigned work.
- Prepare reports, cost comparison and feasibility studies on design alternatives; document issues, provide expertise, and make recommendations related to assigned work in accordance with applicable regulations/codes and standards.
- Monitor, analyze data and formulate programs to improve equipment and/or systems reliability and performance.
- Participate in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program.

Education and Experience
Completion of a university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Mechanical Engineering) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
Experience on TTC projects or other transit related experience is a strong asset.
Must be licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of Ontario.
Additional Requirements
- Demonstrated progressive design and field experience in mechanical maintenance engineering as it pertains to the design, development, maintenance, and repair of facilities and related mechanical equipment.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, methods and practices as they relate to the maintenance of large commercial/industrial buildings.
- Experience in the design and/or implementation of Building Automation Control Systems (BACS).
- Detailed knowledge in the areas of air conditioning, exhaust/ventilation, heating systems, sprinkler systems, and plumbing, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment installations.
- Sound judgement, well-developed analytical, problem solving, verbal communication and technical report writing skills.
- Proven ability to lead a team of mechanicals on projects/reviews, and to co-ordinate the efforts of others in order to accomplish objectives and ensure compliance with applicable departmental policies and procedures.
- A valid Province of Ontario Class ‘G’ Driver’s license and ability to use a personal vehicle to travel to inspect work locations.
- Must be proficient in and keep up to date with relevant computer software (e.g. MicroStation CAD, MS Office Suite)
- Strong knowledge of the applicable codes/practices/standards (e.g. Ontario Building Code, Plumbing Code, ASHRAE BACnet, Ontario Fire Code, TTC standards, CSA standards, OH&S Act, etc.)
