About the role:
Reporting to Senior Director, Complex Transaction Advisory, the Senior Associate is responsible for supporting the management of accounting policy for SLC Finance. The Senior Associate researches, develops, implements, and monitors accounting policy to ensure that financial reporting over invested assets is in compliance with guidance under various bases of accounting and is consistent with the reporting objectives of the Company. The Senior Associate draws on a deep knowledge and understanding of accounting theory and guidance for investments, including financial instruments and alternative assets, to deliver applied solutions. One of the key roles would be to support implementation of new standards in SLC Finance.
What you will do:
Accounting Policies and IFRS Implementation:
- Provide technical accounting support on the implementation projects for the new/modified accounting standards:
- Obtain understanding of the new/modified IFRS standard, interpretations, implementation guidance for the application of the new requirements to Sun Life investments globally
- Provide support for the transition to/ post implementation review of IFRS 9 and related matters, such as classification and measurement (SPPI assessment), coordinate with ECL implementation team, compile disclosures, and other ancillary support
- Assess the impact of the new/modified standards on the business, processes, policies and practices, reporting, disclosures and ensuring timely communication of the impact to various stakeholders within Sun Life
- Support business partners by preparing and delivering training materials on new IFRS requirements
- Interact with the auditors and provide support in their audit process around standards implementation
- Provide technical accounting expertise on new business initiatives and transactions on an ad-hoc or structured basis for the global investment portfolio
- Develop, maintain and evaluate a broad range of investment accounting policy across multiple accounting bases (IFRS & Statutory) from the initiation phase through to dissemination of the policy changes.
- Formulate and deliver written technical analyses and memos, providing evidence-based information and interpretation to support recommendations
- Provide direction for implementation of new investment accounting policy and proper application of existing policy
- Keep current with new accounting standards and developments under IFRS or interpretive statements from the major accounting firms
Reporting and Analytics:
- Coordinate, manage or support several quarterly reporting processes and ad hoc requests including:
- The quarterly submissions to Corporate various financial disclosures and requests
- Manage SPPI assessment of the investment portfolios
- Analyze financial data and trends and create financial reports for decision support
- Reporting and analysis to satisfy audit requirements and support the control environment, as well as supporting a continuous improvement working environment
- Provide leadership and support for strategic projects and initiatives, including development of processes and controls
What do you need to succeed:
Competencies:
- Robust technical understanding of IFRS 9 would be an asset.
- Deep knowledge and application of accounting theory and guidance for investments and insurance
- Knowledge of various investment vehicles
- Experience researching accounting guidance and preparing recommendations
- Understanding of the insurance industry and products
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Willingness and ability to champion for new ideas and innovation
- Ability to work in a team environment both as a contributor and a leader and have the confidence to work independently with little direct supervision
- Excellent analytical, interpretational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to build strong working relationships across various functional areas (Investments, ALM, Portfolio Management, Treasury, Risk) and business units
- Proficient in Microsoft tools such as excel, word and PowerPoint. Knowledge of experience in extracting information from Bloomberg would be an asset
Education and Experience:
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in financial reporting, preferably in financial reporting policy and/ or public accounting
- Completion of a professional accounting designation CPA (CA, CMA, CGA) required

74,100/74 100 - 120,800/120 800The Base Pay range is for the primary location of the job. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
