Job Description

What is the Opportunity?

As part of the Environmental & Social Risk team within Group Risk Management, you will play a role in the management, monitoring, and mitigation of environmental and social (E&S) risks at RBC. You will support the design and implementation of key climate and E&S risk initiatives by providing research and data analytics and insights. A significant focus of this role will be the calculation of RBC’s financed emissions across different asset classes within carbon-intensive sectors and setting and tracking progress on net-zero targets.

The role will report to the Director, E&S Risk Analytics

What will you do?

  • Gather and analyze data required for climate and social risk measurement and work with the Director, E&S Risk Analytics to use this data to  inform actionable steps in the management and monitoring of environmental & social risk.
  • Identify opportunities to improve environmental & social risk data processes and take a leading role in implementing these changes;
  • Optimize data quality and results by seeking out public and private data sources and working with internal stakeholders to source RBC data to improve our climate risk measurement and management capabilities.
  • Collaborate with diverse internal stakeholders across business lines and functions to share E&S Risk data and insights, to inform risk management, business strategy, and ESG and climate disclosures.  
  • Work with the Director, E&S Risk Analytics to assist in the advancement of RBC’s capabilities in measuring financed emissions, setting net-zero targets, and delivering carbon accounting insights across the enterprise.
  • Contribute to and lead development and delivery of presentation and reports.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Degree in a quantitative discipline such as accounting, statistics, economics, econometrics, finance, mathematics, physics, engineering and/or a relevant professional qualification, with concentration in quantitative methods
  • An interest in Environmental and Social Risk in general and climate change in particular
  • An advanced understanding of programming and querying languages, including SQL and python
  • Experience developing presentations, visualizations and dashboards for senior executives and an interest in developing advanced analytical capabilities
  • Demonstrated ability in mathematical, statistical, financial or economic analyses on large, complex datasets and in translating data into business insights
  • A desire and ability to build new and innovative approaches to complex problems.
  • Commitment to quality and accuracy with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-have

  • Knowledge of climate change science with experience in the development and use of climate change and economic scenarios, models, projections and data.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with the climate risk and/or target setting guidance issued by PCAF, NZBA, TCFD, ISSB, and/or OSFI (B-15)
  • Experience with or knowledge of carbon-intensive sectors, e.g. agriculture; aluminum; cement; coal; commercial and residential real estate; iron and steel; oil and gas; power generation; and transportation
  • Experience with or interest in agile or design thinking methodologies or frameworks.
  • Prior Product Management knowledge/experience or an interest in Product Management.
  • Knowledge and experience in quantitative model development, testing and validation.
  • Knowledge of wholesale and retail credit risk rating systems with experience in parameter estimation, portfolio management, or risk appetite.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Job Summary

This position will support the advancement of the bank’s Environmental and Social Risk data management, analysis and disclosure capabilities, and the integration of this data into our risk management framework.
