The incumbent will work in collaboration with Director, Health, Risk Reduction and Resilience to provide evidence-based public health advice, grounded within a solid understanding of Indigenous cultures and contexts. As an Advisor, Public Health, Indigenous Peoples Help Desk, you will continue to provide technical guidance, resources, training, and support to Indigenous populations leadership on Public Health measures. The indigenous populations Help Desk (IPHD) is exploring what kinds of health promotion services could be co-created with rural and remote Indigenous communities, using a virtual/presential hybrid model, and the Public Health Advisor will contribute to ensuring Canadian Red Cross’ work in health with Indigenous communities is safe, respectful, and founded on an Indigenous determinants of health (IDoH) framework.
In this role, you will:
- Advise Indigenous leaders on health and safety matters during COVID-19 and beyond:
- Application of the findings of the Indigenous Populations Help Desk health promotion literature review to co-creation of a health and wellness project identified by community leadership and supported by CRC.
- Conduct and support to additional literature reviews as requested to the team.
- Support the development of an evidence-based strategy for health promotion outreach, which demonstrates culturally sensitive and appropriate approaches and collaboration with Indigenous communities.
- Contribute content to the Tier 3 data base on successful Indigenous and non-Indigenous led health promotion in a range of Indigenous communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
- Help compile and analyze common health promotion elements that have been practiced successfully with Indigenous communities that could be integrated into CRC’s work.
- Offer guidance on IPC/ EPC principles and protocols including strategies to reinforce IPC/EPC protocols and enhance community engagement and ability.
- Offer guidance on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including protocols for use; calculation of supplies needed; donning and doffing techniques.
- Addressing and trouble-shooting options to address barriers to services related to the impacts of historical trauma, lack of equity, risk perceptions social and geographic contexts.
- Contribute to the identification of Indigenous developed health promotion resources and their documentation in the Indigenous People Health Desk repository.
- Reviewing, creating, and delivering briefings and trainings, including via virtual platforms.
What we are looking for:
- The ideal candidate has lived and/or professional experience with First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis nations or communities.
- Active in broader Indigenous networks and has an enduring commitment to sharing and advancing of knowledge derived through Indigenous knowledge systems including balancing Western and Indigenous world views.
- The official languages recognized within the Canadian Red Cross are English and French however demonstrated skills and ability to communicate in an or multiple Indigenous language(s) or ability to communicate and adapt within Indigenous protocol is highly desirable
- Health degree (Bachelor or Master) in one of the following areas: medicine, nursing, public health, paramedic (does not require current Canadian professional licensure) and/or formal/informal training in complementary or traditional healing practices and Indigenous Studies and/or Wholistic health.
- Substantial (3 years+) experience living/working in Indigenous communities in Canada.
- Research experience (literature reviews, identifying Indigenous health trends and underlying drivers, data collection and analysis, transitioning of findings to policy and/or practice).
- Understanding of the Two-Eyed Seeing approach and its value in relation to program design and policy decisions.
- A valid driver's license is required with a satisfactory driver's abstract.
- Demonstrated understanding of unique strengths and complexities that exist within Indigenous communities and the impact of colonialization on health and health outcomes.
- Experience in the provision of health or community services (formal or informal).
- Able to coordinate and foster effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
Working Conditions:
- This is a remote position. If extended there may be a need for occasional deployment, but it is anticipated that that is minimal.
- This position does not require clinical skills.
