In this role you will support laboratory technicians on an ongoing, daily basis, and provide support to new and existing refinery processes from an analytical perspective via method development and equipment selection. You will also be responsible for technical development and training within the laboratory, and assure the systems within the lab comply with the necessary quality standards. 

You will use your expertise to:

  • Provide analytical support in developing and maintaining existing and new processes, up to and including assurance of finished product quality at the refinery
  • Liaise between unit engineers, the lab and our production control group for project support and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Recommend new equipment/techniques, implement, prepare standard operating procedures, and then provide initial training and ongoing support to the technicians
  • Support quality system be responsible for action on lab non-conformances and any necessary root cause investigations
  • Be the laboratory quality representative and oversee document control in the lab
  • Investigate and recommend improvements arising from non-conformances or root cause investigations

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 5 years of experience working in a laboratory
  • 5 years of experience with quality management/continuous improvement standards such as ISO9001
  • A Bachelor’s degree Chemistry
  • The ability to understand, calibrate, and troubleshoot instrumentation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint
  • A zero-tolerance for shortcuts, and if the procedure is incorrect, you fix it
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Experience with ISO9001 quality and other laboratory standards
  • Experience with a variety of analytical techniques and instrumentation; familiarity with ASTM petroleum testing methods
  • An understanding of statistical techniques to apply statistical process control for lab equipment/processes
  • Outstanding analytical and non-authoritative leadership skills, with the ability to think strategically
  • The ability to manage multiple, diverse relationships and activities while maintaining a strong focus on priorities
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills as well as having a strong sense of accountability

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Edmonton refinery in Sherwood Park, located at 801 Petroleum Way
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • You will be required to perform some heavy lifting, adjust instrumentation or compressed gas cylinders
  • You will work with wide variety of chemicals on a daily basis
