Principal, Infrastructure & Natural Resources – Greenfield & Renewables
We are growing! We're seeking a highly motivated team member who enjoys a deal-oriented environment and can handle multiple projects, to join our specialized infrastructure private equity team.
As part of infrastructure’s growth initiative, we have created a specialized investment team focused on greenfield infrastructure and renewable energy. This Greenfield and Renewable (“G&R”) team is focused on sourcing and executing transactions around the globe, as well as running a portfolio of existing assets in their target sectors. The G&R team is dedicated to providing better risk adjusted returns and increased diversification to infrastructure’s existing portfolio. This role requires a deep understanding of valuation theory, excellent strategic thinking skills and an ability to draw conclusions following in-depth analysis. You will use your strong interpersonal and communication skills to articulate ideas and recommendations internally, as well as with external investment partners, senior company executives and diligence advisors.
Who you’ll work with
The Principal will be a core member of the G&R team, which manages OTPP’s investments in renewable power projects and infrastructure assets. You will report into our head of G&R within the Infrastructure & Natural Resources ("INR") group.
INR consists of a team of over 60 highly-specialized private equity investment professionals, with offices in Toronto, London, Singapore, and an additional presence in Santiago, Chile. Currently, INR leads a geographically diverse portfolio of approximately C$28 billion with assets in North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and a target to grow to over $40 billion over the next 5 years.
You will also work cooperatively across the organization to advance a core strategic area of the fund – climate-smart investments – where you will collaborate and partner with other asset classes and internal teams, such as Equities, Teachers’ Innovation Platform, Total Fund Management and Global Strategic Relationships.
What you’ll do
As a dedicated team member, you will evaluate and execute transactions, as well as to manage our existing portfolio companies. A meaningful element of the role is overseeing the work of and mentoring our Analysts and Associates.
As a valued teammate of the G&R investment team, you will:
Work with and lead external advisors to conduct due diligence on investment opportunities which will include projects in the development and construction stage or platforms to pursue development projects;
Handle the development of sophisticated financial models to analyze investment opportunities;
Oversee valuation analysis including identifying key value drivers and financial risks, and
Lead the preparation of presentations, reports and investment recommendations to senior executives.
In managing existing portfolio investments, you will:
Work alongside portfolio company management and board of directors in shaping and executing corporate strategy, oversight and delivery of capital projects, assessing development projects and bolt-on acquisitions;
Review and analyze board materials, business plans and other information prepared by management of our portfolio companies;
Direct the development and maintenance of financial models for our existing investments, and
Prepare internal valuations of portfolio companies.
What you’ll need
5 + years of work experience, preferably in principal investing, investment banking, project finance or corporate development
Bachelor Degree required. Master/MBA preferred. CFA designation a plus.
Past work experience directly related to renewable energy, greenfield development or capital project delivery is considered an asset. This team will be looking at greenfield projects across all sectors in infrastructure in addition to all renewable opportunities. International experience is beneficial.
Knowledge of electricity, renewable energy, and the energy transition is preferred
Experience working with developers or development projects is beneficial but not required
Experience leading material aspects of the investment process, including financial modelling, conducting due diligence and participating in debt financing
Proven history of working collaboratively as part of a team to meet tight timelines within a project-based work environment
Strong interpersonal skills, communication and presentation skills and proficiency in written and verbal English
Additional languages are beneficial but not required
Excellent analytical and quantitative skills to perform in-depth, innovative, critical analysis
A willingness and ability to travel frequently
