Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computer Science and
Perspectivist Language Understanding
Overview
Dr. Charles Welch from the Department of Computing and Software (CAS) is recruiting one (1) postdoctoral researcher for his lab at McMaster University. You will be expected to work on projects that involve other faculty members and students both at the university and within our broader network.
You will contribute to projects related to perspectivist NLP. We are looking to better understand what we need to know about an individual to better predict how they will label subjective data for a variety of tasks. This involves more comprehensive data collection, modeling, and exploration of the broader space of perspectivist and pluralist problems.
Qualifications
The candidate must have and/or demonstrate the following skillset:
- a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics/NLP, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related fields.
- Excellent programming skills in Python.
- Professional working proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Knowledge of current neural network models and implementation tools for neural networks (e.g., PyTorch).
- Experience with publications in top-tier venues in the field of NLP/Computational Linguistics.
Duration and Funding
The term of the fellowship is initially for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal depending on funding. Selection will be based upon the candidate's research potential and fit with the research group in the Department of CAS at the Faculty of Engineering. We prefer the start date of the Postdoctoral Fellowship to be April 6, 2026.
The successful applicant will be placed on a hybrid work arrangement, as agreed upon with the faculty supervisor. The annual salary is $60,000.00 CAD/year, with benefits, provided in accordance with McMaster University guidelines, and commensurate with experience. The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week.
