City : Hamilton

Category : Other

Industry : Education

Employer : McMaster University

Hamilton, ON

Postdoctoral Position

Low-Carbon Concrete and Emerging Supplementary Cementitious Materials

A postdoctoral position is available for a highly motivated researcher to contribute to the project “Propelling Canada’s Low-Carbon Built Environment: Pathways with Net-Zero Concrete.” by advancing innovative concrete technologies aligned with the Cement Association of Canada Net-Zero Carbon Concrete Roadmap.

Project Overview

Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) represent a critical pathway to reducing the carbon footprint of concrete. However, supplies of traditional SCMs—such as Fly Ash and Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag—are declining due to structural changes in the energy and steel sectors. This project aims to advance high-SCM concrete technologies to support Canada’s infrastructure needs while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The research integrates materials science, sustainability assessment, and pathways to field implementation.

Research Focus

The successful candidate will contribute to research that:

  • Identifies emerging SCM sources capable of meeting Canada’s national concrete demand.
  • Accelerates the transition from laboratory characterization to field deployment of high-SCM concrete.
  • Applies a system-level perspective integrating materials development with life-cycle considerations, supply chain analysis, and standards development.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental and/or analytical research on emerging SCMs and concrete mixtures.
  • Characterize material performance, durability, and sustainability impacts.
  • Support translation of laboratory findings to pilot-scale or field applications.
  • Collaborate with academic, industry, and government partners.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Expertise in cementitious materials and concrete technology.
  • Experience with laboratory testing, materials characterization, and life-cycle assessment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.

Appointment Details

  • Position: Postdoctoral Fellow
  • Duration: 2 years (renewable based on performance)
  • Salary: $55,000 to $60,000
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • Location: Civil Engineering/McMaster University

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

McMaster University is committed to fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive research environment. We encourage applications from individuals from equity-deserving groups, including women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities/racialized groups, and individuals of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents; however, all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. Accommodations for applicants with disabilities are available throughout the recruitment process upon request.

Application Process

Applicants should submit:

  • A cover letter outlining research interests and relevant experience
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Contact information for two references

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
