How You Will Contribute:
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Optical Engineering, you will work alongside a team of physicists and engineers responsible for the optical performance of Ciena’s Reconfigurable Line System and WaveLogic™ optical modems.
You will push the boundaries of automation, speed, and data processing of an optical network using Python and/or MATLAB.
You will play a role in crafting, developing, testing, maintaining, and improving various algorithms used to control a system of optical hardware.
You will develop instrumentation routines to characterize the optical physics of modems and line systems.
You will collaborate with a multi-functional team of designers, develop interactive web interfaces for your instrumentation routines and perform version control using GIT.
Required Skills and Experience
BSc or MSc degree in Engineering Physics, Physics, or Electrical Engineering, with a specific interest in optics, photonics & telecommunications.
Proven debugging and problem-solving skills.
Communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are essential.
Ability to learn on the job and adapt to new challenges.
Demonstrated proficiency with Python, MATLAB, JavaScript, HTML5, or REST interfaces in other co-op/inter terms or through coursework.
Foundational knowledge of development tools such as content versioning (e.g. Git) and bug tracking software (e.g. JIRA).
Familiarity with Linux an asset.
Familiarity with standard lab equipment such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and signal generators is required (experience with optical test equipment preferred).
Undergraduate level training on the principals of digital communication systems.
Coursework on fiber optic communication systems and optical components preferred.

Based in Ottawa full-time (the candidate will be expected to spend a significant amount of time on-site in the lab).
