Job Summary: 

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Physics/ Optical Engineering Co-Op to join WaveLogic Science advanced testbed team. The successful candidate will be involved in experimental and theoretical work on the testbed.  The work includes assisting with modem performance measurements, fiber optic transmission experiments and development of DSP algorithms used in coherent optical transmission. The Co-Op will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of optical systems engineering.

The Opportunity

Either a 4 or 8 month term

4 month term: January - April 2024

8 month term: January - August 2024

Responsibilities: 

• Development of MATLAB test-instrumentation interfacing code used in automation of laboratory experiments.

• Conduct laboratory experiments involving optical fiber propagation and characterization of electro-optic components.

• Development of algorithms for analysis of coherent optical transmission signals.

• Document and maintain code using Git version control system.

• Collaborate with other engineers and scientists to solve technical problems.

Requirements: 

• Currently pursuing a degree in Physics, Engineering Physics, Optical/Electrical Engineering, or a related field 

• Strong MATLAB code skills, git version control.  

• Theoretical knowledge of fiberoptic transmission and coherent optical communication.

• Good understanding of FIR and IIR filters, Discrete Fourier Transforms (DFT), linear algebra, equalization, and cost function-based optimization.

• Experience with optical test equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, real time oscilloscopes, optical signal conditioning.

• Familiarity with python/C++ and python web frameworks is an asset.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. 

• Ability to inject a good science pun into -10dB of sentences is an asset.

This is a paid Co-Op position with a duration of 4 to 8 months. The position is based in our optical systems engineering laboratory in Ottawa. The Optical Systems Engineering Co-Op will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects and gain valuable experience in the field of optical systems engineering.
