Your Opportunity
The Stantec Noise, Vibration and Acoustics Team in Ontario is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated co-op student/intern to join our team. The successful applicant may have opportunities for some remote work and travel with field work. Our Acoustical engineers provide specialized services to a wide variety of sectors including industry, government, architecture, transportation, and buildings. Our practitioners offer a full suite of services including permitting, monitoring, modeling, planning, policy studies, design, and control.
We have an opportunity for a highly motivated student to work with our Noise, Vibration and Acoustics (NVA) team based in our Mississauga, Ontario office. This is a co-op/intern position for a person enrolled in an Ontario university program which will run for eight (8) months to one (1) year.
This position will involve some field work to conduct noise and vibration measurements using laboratory-quality equipment and instrumentation. The position will also involve supporting NVA staff on projects in transportation noise, environmental noise assessments and architectural acoustics as the workload allows. Internal technical training will be provided to support this position.
Your Key Responsibilities
Field Work
- Conduct field measurements using the noise/vibration instrumentation. Note field work may require travel. Field work may also involve nighttime work. Field work takes place in all seasons, under various field conditions.
- Download and analyze noise and vibration data. Prepare data (e.g. spreadsheets) for Stantec engineers to interpret and analyze.
- Prepare monitoring and measurement reports for Stantec engineers.
- Assist in developing templates (e.g. Word) and automation (e.g. Excel macros) for reporting and data analysis.
- Assist in organization and coordination of equipment for projects, ensuring equipment is available and/or coordination of rentals for additional equipment needs.
- Prepare and Complete Health and Safety documentation related to field work.
Assessment/Analysis Work
- Support the preparation of noise data for use in environmental noise modelling software.
- Assist with gathering information needs for project analysis.
- Perform data requests and research methodologies as required.
- Process field data into useable formats for modelling/reporting.
- Conduct acoustical modelling using specific acoustic modelling programs (i.e. CADNA/A) or using spreadsheet calculations.
- Provide support for senior staff during client/public meetings.
- Assist in creation of tools for use within the NVA group.
- Provide assistance to the NVA team in cataloging reference material.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Requires access or ownership of a personal car/vehicle.
- Excellent organizational skills, for time tracking, deliverables management and responding to requests.
- Creative, organized and able to multi-task while working independently.
- Diligent and detail oriented with the desire to learn.
- Flexibility in scheduling required for travel related to site surveys.
- Working knowledge of software (e.g., Microsoft Office, CAD, etc.). Automation with programming or macros would be an asset.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
- Programming skills such as python, matlab are considered an asset.
Education and Experience
The successful candidate should be enrolled in a relevant University Program and have completed 3rd year. It is expected that the candidate’s transcript includes at least one course related to noise, vibration and/or acoustics.
