Are you a maintenance engineer looking to advance your skills? In this role, you will identify and mitigate potential safety, reliability, maintainability or operational problems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our pressure equipment assets. Your role is to provide technical direction to the Maintenance and Operations teams to solve equipment issues and provide maintenance guidance and design criteria through the development of scopes of work and the management of change process.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Apply design knowledge and expertise to stationary equipment (tank, heat exchanger, pressure vessel, process fired heater, and piping)
  • Collaborate with Maintenance, Operations, Quality Assurance and Control (QA/QC) and other engineering groups to solve engineering problems; perform engineering analysis for new designs, repairs, modifications, or determination of fitness-for-service
  • Develop scope of work packages to repair failures, deficiencies or implement design improvements, and use management of change process for any changes as a result of new or improved designs being implemented
  • Support QA/QC on inspections, repair recommendations and repair requests, and participate and lead failure investigations and root cause analysis of discrete events while reviewing patterns to identify common root causes
  • Support the Flange Management Program and perform bolt and flange stress calculations for leaking joints
  • Review engineering work produced by other Suncor engineers, engineering firms, and vendors for scopes related to fixed equipment; use risk reviews and other safety checks to accurately manage risks
  • Keep up to date with current industry practices, technologies, and methodologies
  • Participate in reviews and audits of critical designs and equipment to ensure compliance with Suncor engineering standards, criteria, design philosophy, specifications and work; review and approve technical decisions or deviations to Suncor specifications

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 10 or more years of maintenance and/or reliability experience with pressure equipment in the oil and gas industry
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
  • A Professional Engineering designation with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record
  • Effective communication skills; you are capable of understanding, anticipating and responding to the needs of the engineering and operations groups and establishing positive relationships with these groups
  • Leadership, mentorship, and influencing skills to provide strong technical direction to customers
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Knowledge of static equipment design, damage mechanisms, and inspection and repair strategies, including assessment of fitness-for-service
  • Familiarity with API, ASME, NACE, CSA, and other relevant codes and standards, as well as jurisdictional and legal requirements for pressure equipment
  • The interest to continually seek greater knowledge about the systems, processes and hazards in the workplace, in order to understand not just what you do but why you do it
  • A continuous improvement attitude, you pursue operational excellence through a disciplined process to improve effectiveness, efficiency and sustainment of processes and services
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office, and working knowledge of SAP and Livelink is preferred

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our camp-based Fort Hills mining site, located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a 7 days on /7 days off rotation (7 days on, 7 days off; 12 hour shifts)
  • This position is safety sensitive
