Job Description:

This role, reporting to the Director, Consolidated Reporting, is a key contributor in the Corporate Finance team responsible for supporting Sun Life's global accounting and reporting functions.

The Manager will be accountable for managing monthly and quarterly financial close processes, preparation of consolidated and legal entity financial statements and reporting schedules, supervising day-to-day accounting functions and general ledger controls, performing analytical reviews on financial results, and lead projects, process improvement initiatives and ad-hoc business transactions as required.

 

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, quick learner, results-driven individual looking to advance their career in accounting & finance, with a passion to lead and drive change to improve operational efficiency.

What will you do?

  • Manage accounting transactions for Corporate Accounting, including but not limited to external and internal financing transactions. Manage the global consolidation process for parent and subsidiaries in a multi-currency environment on monthly and quarterly basis

  • Manage account reconciliation process for Corporate functional units, and prepare quarterly stat reports for consolidated SLF in collaboration with other Business Groups.

  • Identify and implement process improvements initiatives in collaboration with cross-team stakeholders

  • Prepare external quarterly financial statements for consolidated SLF in accordance with IFRS

  • Prepare/review internal management deliverables, including variance analysis and ad-hoc reports/requests

  • Implement and execute appropriate SOX-compliant controls over financial close and reporting processes

  • Participate in the accounting for complex transactions and understand associated implications on various financial reporting requirements and organizational performance

  • Assist with global accounting system implementations and collaborate with other financial reporting teams on special projects as required

  • Assist external auditors in the quarterly review/annual audit process

  • Actively coach and develop junior staff

What do you need to succeed?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting

  • Accounting designation CPA, CA, CMA or CGA or equivalent

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in either public accounting or publicly-traded companies

  • Strong technical knowledge of financial accounting and financial reporting under IFRS

  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA (including Fiori and Analysis for Office) and Aptitude Accounting Hub is an advantage

  • Experience with Longview, Tableau or Workiva wDesk is an advantage  

Preferred skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; with a strong attention to detail while maintaining a "big picture" view in a complex environment

  • Ability to manage conflicts and competing priorities, with a strong ability to influence without authority to navigate a decentralized organization and drive change across functional groups to achieve desired outcomes

  • Ability to think outside the box to maximize utilization of technology (e.g. RPA) to eliminate, automate or otherwise streamline manual processes to drive operational excellence   

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to present results and recommendations to target audience in a clear and concise manner

  • Ability to manage changing priorities; excellent organization and project management skills

  • Self-starter, with a proven track record to lead projects and deliver tangible results

  • Ability to motivate and lead finance team members, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
