Who we are 

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.


 

The Opportunity

 

The Manager - Corporate Technology Solutions will report directly to the Director, IT Operations and have primary responsibility to oversee the IT implementation and operations of technology infrastructure which includes server software, databases, web based application, SSL and DNS related services.position is accountable for the Corporate Technology Solutions (CTS) department within the Information and Technology Services (I&TS) business unit reporting directly to the Director, IT Operations.

 

The accountabilities of the CTS department include:

  • Acquisition, configuration, implementation and management of all server software required to deliver services to the business related to business systems, communications and collaboration
  • Acquisition, configuration, implementation and management of all database hardware and software required to deliver services to the business related to business systems, communications and collaboration
  • Acquisition, configuration, implementation and management of all web based application container technologies required to deliver services to the business related to business systems, communications and collaboration
  • Procurement and management of all email and collaboration technologies used for inter-office, inter-employee and external communications
  • Manage the delivery of all SSL and DNS related services
  • Tier 2 & 3 support of IESO servers, databases, DNS services, Windows services (e.g. – print service, etc.), email services and collaboration services
  • Technical Analysis service for changes to infrastructure
  • Development of standards and guidelines for infrastructure usage/delivery at the IESO

 

The Senior Manager, CTS is responsible for the day to day activities necessary to fulfill these accountabilities.

 

The Manager, CTS must develop and maintain key relationships within I&TS as well as Enterprise Change and develop a good understanding of all business functions at the IESO. This includes:

  • Coordination with the Business Service departments to deliver middleware, server, database and email services that can be effectively supported and that projects provide staff with the appropriate training, tools and procedures to perform their responsibilities
  • Coordination with the Business Solutions department to deliver holistic IT solutions that integrate with other IESO infrastructure and business solutions and that projects provide staff with the appropriate training, tools and procedures to perform their responsibilities.
  • Coordination with Information Security to deliver solutions that are aligned with security standards and guidelines
  • Coordinate with Enterprise Change to become an effective team when delivering projects that involve IT changes.

 

The incumbent must manage staff and their work programs/projects ensuring priorities and deadlines are met and that services are delivered according to defined service levels. The Senior Manager, CTS must also exercise full managerial accountabilities, including human resource management in the areas of staff development, training, performance reviews, staff hiring and advancement, salary recommendations/approvals, all aspects of performance management including dismissal, administering work programs and ensuring staff output effectively meets business needs and goals.

 

What you'll do

  1.  
  • Deliver assigned Information and Technology Services (I&TS) programs and projects, and support the delivery of overall I&TS programs and projects.
  • Initiate, oversee and coordinate the delivery of assigned business systems or technology-related projects or enhancements in accordance with approved business case and Project Definition document. 
  • Define the objectives and scope of projects including impacts, critical factors, responsibilities, constraints and contingencies. 
  • Plan and assign projects with appropriate instructions and technical directions assuming primary responsibility for achieving project objectives.
  • Integrate the efforts of the team with others both inside and outside I&TS. 
  • Monitor project status and work results to ensure timely progress and desired quality. 
  • Direct the preparation of project estimates. 
  • Recommend resource allocations and assignments. 
  • Review plans and results with customers.
  • Lead, co-ordinate, and manage a team in the delivery of I&TS programs and projects.
  • Manage assigned staff engaged in the development, implementation, maintenance, support and documentation of application systems, hardware, production operation, operating and support systems. 
  • Plan, organize, direct and prioritize the work of the unit in accordance with established I&TS and company standards, specifications, practices and procedures.
  • Provide instructions, advice and guidance, and be accountable for the quality and productivity generated by unit. Carry out performance appraisals. 
  • Provide leadership and direction in terms of achieving objectives and accomplishing work programs. 
  • Monitor operational performance of the team against planned targets. 
  • Provide supervision to staff, including full responsibility for hiring and advancement, staff development, training, performance reviews, salary recommendations/approvals, all aspects of performance management, including dismissal, administering work programs and ensuring staff output effectively meet business needs and goals; ensuring quality, quantity, timeliness of work production to achieve business objectives. Effectively resolve work performance issues.
  • Provide clear expectations, performance measures, meaningful feedback and corrective action as required.
  • Act as a coach and facilitator to create and sustain a co-operative and supportive team environment.  Work with staff to identify training and development needs and solutions to enhance and develop their skills to ensure availability of key knowledge skills to achieve work unit’s objectives. 
  • Provide technical and client account management for assigned areas.
  • Collaborate and work closely with other I&TS staff to resolve issues and ensure overall I&TS services and deliverables are met. Coordinate activities and commit resources in support of other ITS work units.
  • Coordinate and direct the efforts of external vendors and suppliers in accordance with contractual terms and ensure compliance with established I&TS and company standards, specifications, practices and procedures.  Participate in contract monitoring.  Persuade vendors to adopt applications and schedules beneficial to the company.
  • Negotiate and operate existing IT systems and services to agreed standards.  Introduce system changes in a safe and non-disruptive manner. Maintain a complete and accurate understanding of component inter-relationships within the team and the interfaces with other teams.
  • Contribute to the development of business and technical strategies and architectures that support company and I&TS objectives.
  • Identify opportunities for improving the efficiency of the products and services for which the team is responsible.
  • Escalate issues and impediments to I&TS management team in a timely manner.
  • Stay abreast of technical directions and applications within corporation and the industry.  Maintain current knowledge in broad areas of computer and information technology, including new or revised equipment, software, procedures or applications
  • Perform other duties as required

 

What you'll need

  • Requires knowledge of engineering and computer principles to carry out engineering and analytical studies for operating performance analysis.  This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a 4-year university education in the appropriate field/ discipline or by having the equivalent level of education.  
  • Requires fluency in both oral and written English to communicate effectively. 
  • Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports and presentations.  
  • Requires experience with information technology and IT operations practices and procedures.  Requires experience in the supervisory aspects of the job.  Requires experience in project management

 

A period of over 10 years up to and including 12 years is considered necessary to gain this experience

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga location.
