What is the opportunity?
RBC is seeking an expert engineer for our Finance Technology group. You will be heavily involved in shaping the future technology landscape of RBC by playing a crucial role in our site reliability transformation initiative. Working closely with our engineering and operations teams to ensure top-notch performance, scalability, and reliability across our systems.
The lead for a site reliability engineering (SRE) enablement squad, you will be responsible for the development, implementation, and acceleration of application resiliency within our teams. Your squad will work standalone delivering key business value by implementing strategic components, or embedded within teams. Squads have one or more specializations: from analytics and automation, through to observability.
You'll have deep knowledge and experience working in an application development or technology operations organization and a natural imperative to share what you've learned. You should be a strong communicator. Comfortable organising and delivering technical presentations and hands-on learning labs as you'll be a community lead within our SRE Guild.
What you will do?
Engineering:
Drive transformation by continuously automating existing processes
Lead technical design and execution to improve overall application resiliency
Track, audit, monitor, and implement technical work streams. Performing complex application programming activities, including coding, testing, debugging, documenting, maintaining, and modifying complex applications programs
Technical Consultation:
Consult on SRE product build both within Finance Technology and the enterprise
Analyze features such as feasibility, associated costs, time, and the compatibility of new programs with existing programs, and hardware
Perform functional & non-functional requirements analysis of service reliable plans and assessments
Verify applications meet SRE standards in production. Seek to deliver zero-downtime for supported applications
Embed in application teams to improve SRE practices & participate in hands-on SRE Squad activities
Ensure that expected application performance levels are achieved. Establishing and exceeding service level objectives (SLO)
Innovation and learning:
Stay abreast of technology change and learn constantly, through official training assignments and self-assigned learning
Teach and guide teams to increase overall SRE best practice awareness, collaborating with peers to establish an SRE Guild across Finance Technology
Demonstrate new technology Proof-Of-Concepts to teams to rapidly increase SRE Adoption
Seen by peers & direct reports as the very best, setting the gold standard
Bold and innovative in driving change a broad thinker who takes decisive action
People manager:
Lead a team of SREs to enable acceleration of SRE transformation and resiliency across Finance Technology
Manage a pipeline of talent, providing mentorship and career coaching/development across organization
Highly adaptive leader, aspiring to a range of senior leadership roles across enterprise
What you need to succeed?
Must have:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Or Diploma in other Technical related disciplines
Extensive experience in software engineering, with a strong background in operations and/or system administration.
Advanced knowledge of industry practices, with focus SRE & DevOps
Advanced knowledge of at least 1 programming language (Go/Python/Java)
Advanced experience in a variety of environments (Cloud, distributed and mainframe, business workflows and services/APIs, databases)
Experience working with industry leading monitoring, alerting, logging, graphing, dashboarding tools (Dynatrace, Moogsoft, PagerDuty, Elastic, Splunk, DataDog, Grafana, Kibana)
Proficiency in at least 3 of Python, Openshift, Azure, Ansible, Kafka, Angular, Typescript, Java, or C#
Nice to have:
Demonstrated experience in implementing and leading SRE practices within an organization
Active involvement in the wider industry, such as contributions to open-source projects or industry groups
Capability to provide technical mentorship to incoming engineers
Excellent communication skills, negotiation skills, stakeholder management
