LCC International Student Engagement Officer
The LCC International Student Engagement Officer works with the Language and Culture Centre and International & Partnerships department to create a series of student engagement opportunities designed to build a welcoming experience for international students arriving at Mohawk College and living in the Hamilton community.
The ideal candidate will have experience in student leadership, be enthusiastic, creative, and have a passion for inclusive community-building. The incumbent must have demonstrated event planning and organizational skills, strong intercultural communication skills, and familiarity with campus and community resources.
The incumbent will focus on the initial arrival and welcoming period for international and exchange students to help ensure that they have a smooth, welcoming, and positive transition experience into Mohawk College and the Hamilton community. They will also work on events that ensure a holistic approach to International Student engagement, capturing and celebrating Mohawk students’ multiculturalism, networking events that will bring together international alumni with current international students, and opportunities for international students to learn and experience the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area.
Responsibilities:
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Events Coordination
- Plans, develops and continually monitors a yearly schedule of events and trips designed to build welcoming experiences for international students at Mohawk College (online and at all campuses).
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders as well as student volunteers to provide a high quality of service and professionalism from concept to completion, ensuring all details related to the event (venue rental, food ordering, game rental, guest speakers, etc.) are effectively and appropriately achieved.
- Coordinates events communications plans and produces promotional material to attract the widest relevant audience to support and promote events, e.g. universal voice mail, invitations, invitation lists, guest lists, RSVP’s web announcements and publicity, events scripts, and internal and external signage and security.
- Provides on-site direction at student engagement’s events for the International & Partnerships department.
- Monitors all campus events and events scheduling to ensure complementary rather than conflicting planning and to ensure the widest awareness of all events by all staff as appropriate.
- Ensures that the integrity and reputation of the College is positively maintained.
- Develops new initiatives to promote and celebrate Mohawk to International students.
- Working with the Manager, International and Exchange Students, the incumbent generates event budgets, authorizes all purchase orders and prepares detailed information for invoices and charges back for events held at Mohawk, as well as arranges for paid services and materials needed for successful execution of events, coordinating part-time staff and contract employees and students, rental companies, food services and entertainment.
- Prepares post-event evaluations to ensure appropriate record keeping for event statistics to assist with future event planning.
Volunteer Coordination
- Coordinates the volunteer initiative within the Language and Culture Centre by promoting, recruiting, communicating, and training of new international students’ volunteers
- Hosts role training meetings and assignments in preparation for events as well as on event day
- Coordinates regular meetings with the Content Creator volunteers for LCC content creation development and strategy, working in collaboration with the LCC and International Coordinator for the department’s Social Media Strategy
College-Wide International Student Representation
- Liaise with Mohawk Alumni department representing the Language and Culture Centre, to coordinate events and initiatives that brings together Mohawk’s current international students with International Alumni
- Represents the Language and Culture Centre with other departments within Mohawk, creating centralized coordination and strategic oversight of international student engagement events, campaigns, and programs
Campus Event Support
- Assist and attend non-IS targeted events to provide international perspective and ideas
Other
- Engage with visiting international students in mobility programs and scholarships in the Language and Culture Centre (LCC) initiatives.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:
- 2-year diploma or equivalent in a related discipline (Events, Hospitality), preferably with a public relations or special events management emphasis, including project management
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with International students, event coordination in a multicultural environment, digital marketing, student’s social media engagement, and coordination of volunteer initiatives for international studetns
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
