About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary full-time Laboratory Assistant/Clerk to join our dynamic Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team.
The Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing extensive testing on donated blood for the infectious diseases and blood groups. These testing services help ensure a safe and secure blood supply that protects donors and recipients. Every unit is tested so we can ensure a safe supply chain to every patient. The supply chain is responsible for ten laboratory testing sites, which are under one management structure. This includes donor testing, diagnostic services, product quality control (QC) testing, three reference laboratories and HLA labs for stem cells and platelets.
Formula for success
- Drawing upon your communication skills, you will answer telephone calls and faxes, screen and forward calls to appropriate area/person, take messages, and handle general inquiries.
- Using your attention to detail, you will receive requests for test result reports, retrieve and verify information and fax reports to physician/hospital; you will also enter, maintain and generate data records.
- Utilizing your organizational skills, you will set up and maintain a filing system for reports, worksheets and correspondence; you will also search for and retrieve files, as required, and prepare records for off-site storage, as required.
- Applying your laboratory experience, you will receive and prepare samples for testing per approved procedures, as well as perform equipment maintenance and start-up.
Desired education and skills
- Grade 12, and two year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Ability to keyboard at 55 w.p.m.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively
- Ability to organize workload and set priorities.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

What you can expect
- This role works Monday to Friday as follows: 0700-1500, 0800-1600, 0900-1700. Rest Days Saturday/Sunday.
