The Opportunity:

 

WSP is currently seeking a Junior Urban Planner to join our Planning, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design studio, located in our Winnipeg office.  Reporting to the Manager, this Junior Urban Planner will be responsible for assisting senior staff with various community and urban planning tasks including, but not limited to, stakeholder and public engagement, research and development of municipal development plans, secondary plans, zoning bylaws, policy documents, and assist in obtaining various regulatory approvals related to development applications.

A day in the life:

  • Perform professional work related to a variety of planning assignments
  • Undertake a variety of tasks related to stakeholder and public engagement projects
  • Undertake research and analysis of various scenarios and formal presentation of analysis
  • Provide professional planning consulting services to the land development industry, including client advice and regulatory approvals
  • Planning policy and zoning interpretation/administration for municipal and land development clients
  • Administer permitting/development applications under the guidance of senior planners
  • Research and develop policies for municipal development plans, secondary plans
  • Act as a liaison between clients and approving authorities
  • Ability to effectively communicate with provincial government agencies, municipalities, private developers, special interest groups, organizations and institutions
  • Conduct research and prepare various technical background to support various long-range planning projects
  • Skills to speak to a diverse range of audiences from the general public to various community/business groups
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and other business development activities; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

What you'll bring to WSP ...

  • A degree in Community Planning, Urban Planning, and / or related field
  • A full membership (RPP), or eligibility, of the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute
  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible urban planning experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Aptitude and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Extensive analytical, creative, decision-making, and strategic skills and a proven ability to reach sound decisions and to resolve complex challenges
  • Experience in public engagement experience and/or IAP2 training would be considered an asset
  • Experience in land development planning would be considered an asset; and
  • Excellent time-management skills.
