Your Opportunity

We currently have three openings for talented and ambitious Junior Environmental Technicians within our British Columbia Offices. In this role, your main task will be to perform as a field assistant, however there may be some potential office related task. Field assistant tasks include assisting with field program planning, data collection & analysis, and technical reporting for a variety of field programs. This is a contract role set to start in April/May and end once field season completes, typically September/October.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Able to work in a collaborative team environment and under deadlines in wilderness and outdoor settings.
• As a field assistant you may be involved in a range of field programs including, but not limited to:
• Amphibian identification, surveys, and salvage
• Bird identification, bird surveys, bird nest surveys
• Remote camera set up and maintenance
• Wildlife habitat feature surveys
• Vegetation identification and surveys
• Wetland and ecosystem mapping
• Weed surveys and weed mapping
• Proven technical, communication, writing and organization skills.
• Well-developed computer skills such as Excel, Microsoft Word
• Commitment to be away from home, staying in hotels or camps, working 12-hour days (including evenings and weekends) under a variety of conditions for 14 days at a time or longer.
• During the course of field work you are likely to be exposed to inclement weather and difficult terrain.
• Able to lift 50lbs and endure long days of physically and mentally challenging field work while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused attitude.
• Excellent navigational skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment and solve problems in the field.
• Prioritize safety in all tasks

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• May be required to pass a drug and alcohol test and maintain that status for the duration of employment based on specific client requirements
• Adaptability, organization, critical thinking, self-motivation, a keen willingness to learn, a love of the outdoors, wilderness and travel experience, attention to detail, succinct writing ability, and ability to multitask.
• Additional skills such as current British Columbia first aid training (OFA1), WHMIS, H2S Alive, UTV operator training, bird and plant identification, and mechanical aptitude are assets, but are not required.
• Valid drivers license and access to a vehicle is preferred, but not required.
• Experience completing wildlife and/or vegetation field surveys, preferably in BC.
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultural, historical, and political context in Canada
• Familiarity with relevant provincial and federal regulations and guidelines

Education and Experience

• Degree (in progress or completed) in biology or conservation, environmental biology/technology, renewable resources, ecology, or environmental sciences.
• Candidates eligible for registration with the College of Applied Biology as a Biologist in Training, Registered Biology Technologist in Training, or Applied Biology Technician in Training may be given preference

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
