The Opportunity:

WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate Biologist to join our WSP E&I team in Vancouver, BC. You will join our BC Hydro project team and will be integral in providing office and field-based support for our ongoing environmental projects, ranging from stand-alone environmental permitting applications to Environmental Assessments for more complex multi-disciplinary projects. You will work in a close-knit team of dedicated professionals including biologists, archaeologists and contaminated sites specialists to support the planning, design, and construction of BC Hydro’s electrical transmission, distribution and renewable energy infrastructure.

You will bring your experience in ecological field reconnaissance, migratory bird surveys, species-at-risk targeted surveys or environmental monitoring, and you will seamlessly fit into the team and be able to share your experience in environmental planning and risk management to make an immediate impact.

This position can be based out of our Vancouver office with the flexibility to work remotely while balancing of office needs.

A day in the life:

  • You’ll be a champion for Health & Safety – this is always your top priority, as it is ours
  • You’ll conduct natural sciences baseline studies, pre-construction environmental surveys such as migratory bird nest surveys and amphibian salvages, and environmental monitoring during construction.
  • You’ll be willing to learn and be trained in diverse fieldwork techniques and requirements but are equally comfortable with office tasks based on your experience level
  • You’ll support the natural sciences component of Environmental Assessments
  • You’ll obtain environmental permits, approvals and clearances associated with federal and provincial environmental legislation and policies
  • You’ll collaboratively coordinate with internal technical discipline leads, technical support staff and sub-consultants for the timely execution of technical studies and preparation of natural sciences documentation required to support planning, design and permitting process
  • You’ll participate in regulatory agency consultation meetings and public information sessions to establish sound working relationships with relevant Governmental Authorities and Stakeholders
  • You’ll have the ability to recognize project risks and provide meaningful input to solve complex problems
  • You’ll develop environmental management plans (EMPs) and species-specific management plans
  • You’ll develop monitoring studies to confirm the compliance and effectiveness of environmental mitigation and compensation measures

What you'll bring to WSP ...

  • Post-secondary education in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Environmental Policy, or a related science/engineering discipline
  • You'll have at least 3-5 years under your belt working in a similar role in the consulting industry
  • You'll bringing your experience in standard field protocols for ecological surveys and your experience interpreting environmental policies and legislation (think: the Migratory Bird Convention Act, the Species at Risk Act, the provincial Wildlife Act, etc.)
  • You enjoy fieldwork and like to work autonomously - think the opposite of your standard 9-5 desk job!
  • You've got an unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License valid in BC, experience driving a truck and a clean Driver's Abstract, and you know your way around the MS Office suite of products;
  • You want to experience what it's like to work for the leading environmental consulting firm globally and be part of a growing and thriving team
