Job Summary: |
Reporting to the Senior Health Physicist, the Health Physicist will manage the staff and resources required to implement the radiation safety program in University nuclear facilities and laboratories. The Health Physicist will act as an expert resource in identifying, assessing and mitigating radiological hazards; Responsibilities include managing and directly supervising staff, managing multiple projects and programs and determining priorities to achieve safety and regulatory compliance goals and planning, leading, organizing and controlling the associated technical work. The Health Physicist's supervisory duties will include hiring and disciplining of staff. The Health Physicist will act as the designate for the Senior Health Physicist in department operations, emergency response and in dealing with Regulatory agencies.
Accountabilities: |
- Lead the implementation of aspects of the Radiation Safety Programs for the University, including the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, the McMaster Accelerator laboratory, the NRB High Level Lab Facility, campus radioisotope laboratories and x-ray facilities. Manage the implementation of the radiation safety program in University nuclear facilities and laboratories including the review of work, the preparation of permits, implementation of procedures, conduct of internal audits and compliance management.
- Manage multiple programs and initiatives - administer and direct the activities of the department's technical and administrative staff on projects and objectives. Prioritize and assign work. Hire, discipline and assess performance
- Design, develop and deliver specialized radiological protection training and presentations for internal and external audiences.
- Monitor and audit aspects of the Radiation Safety program with respect to established objectives for the management of radiation safety in the activities of the University.
- Collaborate in the development of policy and procedures for the management of radiation safety.
- Lead response to radiological incidents and emergencies. Investigate incidents and manage follow-up and regulatory reporting. Must be on call on a rotating basis.
- Prepare technical reports regarding radiation safety as required. Such reports could range from the derivation of MNR Release limits to dose reconstructions to documented radiological work reviews.
- Prepare advanced drafts of annual compliance reports to be submitted to the CNSC. Assist in the preparation of the Health Physics Annual Report to be submitted to the Vice President Administration, the HPAC and the Board of Governors.
- Serve as ex-officio member of the Health Physics Advisory Committee and the Reactor Operational Committee.
- Represent the University in dealing with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and other federal, provincial and municipal regulatory agencies in matters related to radiation safety. Manage issues related to licensing. Provide expert consultation on regulatory requirements and developments. Prepare Annual Compliance Reports to be submitted to the CNSC.
- Act as the designate for the Senior Health Physicist in dealings with Regulatory authorities and internal contacts.
