Career readiness is a key priority in the College of Biological Science’s strategic plan. This plan includes guiding students to increase awareness of skill develop and career preparation across the degree, and enhancing partnerships with community and industry leaders in fields related to biological science.

The incumbent will be responsible for implementing the CBS skills development and career planning strategy that aligns employability skills with degree and major specific learning outcomes.  Included in this strategy is the development, coordination and implementation of a career-focused course and development of skills focused workshops. This individual will work closely with current on-campus offices to tailor the programming to the skills and preparation needed for relevant job markets for biological science students, in and outside of academia.

In collaboration with the Experiential Learning Centre, Coop and Career Services, John F. Wood Centre for Business and Student Enterprise and Alumni Affairs, the incumbent will work to foster relationships with relevant industry and community partners (for-profit, not-for-profit and governmental agencies) to help develop work-integrated and experiential learning opportunities for CBS students. This responsibility will include supporting current relationships and at times, initiating, developing and maintaining professional relationships with external partners. With support from Co-op and Career Services this individual will help develop internal policy and practices for faculty and staff to maintain and develop new experiential learning opportunities within the CBS curriculum and co-curriculum.

Requirements of the position include: A University degree is required (a Masters degree in education would be considered an asset) and 3 years of related experience, must include industry experience.  A science background and/or psychology/counselling background is also useful for understanding and advancing the college needs and best relating to students. One of the following certifications would be considered an asset: MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory Certification, Certificate in Adult Education, Human Resources Management Certificate (Recruitment/Selection) or Career Development Practitioner Certificate.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and a high level of emotional intelligence
  • Previous experience working with and advising diverse populations
  • Proven problem-solving abilities, effective independent learner and negotiation skills
  • Experience in career planning and development
  • Excellent communication skills including experience writing, drafting and providing materials for a variety of audiences as well as strong interpersonal and public speaking skills needed to build and maintain relationships with a variety of partners
  • Experience delivering courses or developing training modules either face-to-face or on-line; writing, evaluating and tracking assignments and assessments
  • Tact, diplomacy and facilitation skills needed to keep processes moving forward to completion and provide understanding of the big picture within the specific task
  • Ability to engage fully, and interact respectfully and with integrity with team members to achieve central goals or tasks
  • Strong time management and organizational skills for prioritizing work and responding to tight production timelines
  • Knowledge of current occupational, educational and employment opportunities related to career development and student employment and awareness of human resource practices, changing labour market trends, related legislation and available resources.
  • Knowledge of the private and pubic sector environment including post-secondary communities
  • Experience with a Learning Management System is helpful
