We are hiring a Full-Time Permanent Engineer, Distribution Grid Technology position working out of Edmonton, AB.
As the Distribution Grid Technology Engineer, you are responsible for managing the load flow model within the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) and DERMS systems used by System Control Operators (SCO), supporting the integration of new distribution grid technologies, implementing advanced ADMS functions, and providing real-time distribution engineering support for SCO’s. You are accountable for delivering technical and strategic assignments as required by the Manager, System Control Engineering. This includes developing standards and processes for maintaining the ADMS model, completing engineering documentation, and interfacing with SCO to support real-time operation of the distribution system.

What you’d be responsible for
- Providing input to the System Control Engineering plans and directions to ensure alignment within EPCOR Distribution and Transmission Inc. (EDTI) and EPCOR.
- Analyzing and reviewing ADMS, DERMS, and other integrated system tools configurations and data to ensure adequate operation.
- Leading enhancement of the ADMS tool to incorporate advanced functions such as FLISR.
- Providing real-time support to SCO’s to prepare for and respond to adverse system conditions and mitigate system risks on the distribution system.
- Assisting in the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics and effective cross-functional accountability and authority practices. Identifying issues impacting operational performance and support initiatives for continuous improvement.
- Providing technical input, testing, validation, and support for a variety of projects.
- Developing standards to integrate DERs, remote switches, remote fault indicators, and other technologies into the ADMS and DERMs load flow and network model.
- Proactively identifying, developing, reviewing and revising System Operations procedures and processes to ensure safe and reliable operations and to ensure compliance to policies, standards, and regulatory requirements, including mitigation of risks.
- Developing and maintaining productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Reviewing, developing, and driving processes and procedures used by SCADA technicians to configure, maintain, and troubleshoot the ADMS system model.
- Leading and representing System Control Engineering as an interface to other EPCOR groups on ADMS initiatives (System Planning, Substation and Distribution Engineering, etc.)
- Leading implementation of new ADMS engineering functionalities and troubleshoot ongoing issues.
- Performing studies and providing recommendations for system improvements from a system operations perspective.
- Developing, reviewing and revising standards and processes to maintain ADMS and DERMS models and properly incorporate SCADA telemetry data into advanced functions.
- Representing EDTI to external control system stakeholders such as AESO and AltaLink.
- Developing and implementing operational project plans, including review and approval of EIT’s and junior engineers’ work.
What’s required to be successful
- Professional Engineer with B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, preferably specializing in power, registered with A.P.E.G.A
- 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in utility operations, distribution design, distribution planning, system modelling or distribution automation
- Working knowledge of ADMS, or EMS systems to support distribution and transmission power grid operations
- Understanding of DERs (DG, EV, Energy Storage) and DERMs systems – including telecommunication systems.
- Expertise in power systems and System Control operations, including advanced applications such as state estimation and contingency analysis tools
- Demonstrated ability to use and troubleshoot power system analysis software for studies such as load flow, short circuit analysis, protection coordination, etc.
- Sound knowledge of electric transmission and distribution power systems, methods, and engineering
- Basic knowledge of SCADA methods and engineering
- Experience with CYME, PSS/E, and GIS systems
- Familiarity with remote switches, monitors and relays used in power systems.
- Ability to support initiatives, working independently or collaboratively, and applying good judgment with limited data.
- Creative problem-solving coupled with an ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to meet commitments.
- Strong ability to support and provide guidance to other team members, as well as adapt to different styles of communication.
