The Facility Services Department supports the academic mission of McMaster, its cutting-edge research, and world-class teaching and learning. Our team does this by developing innovative spaces to study, research, and work and by keeping our campus safe, clean, well-maintained, and beautiful. Our team of approximately 400 does this essential work both on our campus, which includes 55+ buildings on 300 acres, also on our multiple off-site locations, which include 11 buildings.  

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

Working in collaboration with a diverse team of trades professionals, the Electrician is responsible for the installation, alteration, repair, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical systems (up to 750V), components and control equipment. This position performs skilled trades work for maintenance, repair, and small renovation projects across all University campuses and buildings. The Electrician is expected to maintain an active and valid Ontario Electrician Certificate of Qualification (442A or 309A) in good standing, ensuring all work is completed safely and in compliance with applicable codes, legislative requirements and University standards.

 

Primary Accountabilities

  • Perform duties of a Licensed Electrician in Ontario with valid proof of Certification of Qualification (442A or 309A) and licensing in good standing, in compliance with current codes and regulations as required by the Certificate of Qualification and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
  • Perform skilled trade for maintenance, repair and small renovations.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical system issues and provide technical advice for repairs.
  • Install, maintain, modify and repair electrical distribution systems and their associated electrical equipment up to 750V – including but not limited to transformers, switchgear, motors, lighting and cables, receptacles and switches – as well as emergency electrical equipment such as transfer switches and generators, including performing monthly operational testing.
  • Inspect, test components and electrical circuits, and perform preventative maintenance of electrical systems.
  • Investigate and perform load calculations to support additions or upgrades of building electrical systems.
  • Supply, install, repair, test and upgrade electrical equipment and motor control systems, including but not limited to compressors, data and telecommunication cabling, fan coil units, lighting, lab equipment, medical equipment, sterilizers, stills, MCCs, motor starters and variable frequency drives (VFDs).  
  • Maintain building automation systems and automated lighting control systems, electrical circuits, fixtures, fittings in good repair and complete repairs required by ESA inspections.
  • Connect and disconnect power to equipment as requested, in compliance with applicable codes and safety procedures.
  • Investigate and perform shutdowns and power changeovers to safely integrate new loads into existing systems, ensuring proper notification and safety compliance
  • Set up temporary power and lighting for University events.
  • Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, wiring diagrams and manufacturer’s installation manuals to determine work requirements and the sequence of repairs or installations.
  • Utilize technical documents to complete assigned projects and update drawings to reflect any changes from work performed.
  • Accurately document all work completed in the work order management system, reporting system issues to the Electrical Operations Manager.
  • Provide advice to clients and explain technical terms in non-technical language.
  • Manages assigned work orders from initiation to completion, documenting all required information in databases and ensuring proper closeout in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Operate a motor vehicle or golf cart for transportation on campus.
  • Organize materials, tools and support staff in the shop and at the job site.
  • Perform preventative maintenance work and assist with creating these schedules.
  • Provide input to estimates for hours and materials as required by work order.
  • Guide consultants, property managers and project managers to University buildings as assigned.
  • Ensure work areas are left clean, safe and secure upon completion of tasks.
 

 

 

General Accountabilities

  • Operate within established security and safety regulations, University policies and procedures, and applicable legislation
  • Request, order, or pick up required materials from approved suppliers to complete work orders, following procurement practices.
  • Remain knowledgeable and current with trade requirements through participation in courses, instructional seminars and trade shows as required and/or sponsored by the University.
  • Communicate with fellow workers, faculty, students, staff and visitors in an appropriate and effective manner to establish effective working relationships and respond to needs.
  • Support the preparation of documentation required for control, audit or reporting purposes and safety inspections.
  • Demonstrate behaviour consistent with organizational values while delivering high-quality work in a safe, collaborative and customer-focused manner.
  • Performs pre-and post-work tasks such as preparing and securing the job site, transporting tools and equipment, and restoring the area upon completion. 
 

Qualifications

 

 

 

Education:

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
  • A current and valid Ontario Industrial Electrician or Construction and Maintenance Electrician Certificate of Qualification (442A or 309A) is required.
  • Must possess a valid class G driver license to travel between University offsite locations as required.
  • Additional certifications are an asset.
 

 

 

Experience: 3 years of related experience.
