Overview:

The Electrical Technician provides technical support for researchers in the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering Department. Support encompasses the design, sourcing, construction, development, troubleshooting, and maintenance of research and teaching equipment with a focus on electrical equipment. This position reports to the Laboratory Director of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering.

Responsibilities:

Provide Technical Support for Research Activities

  • Supervise, instruct, and assist graduate students with their research and the use of laboratory equipment
  • Develop electronic solutions for student projects, teaching equipment, and research activities
  • Support the installation of high-voltage electrical devices
  • Set up, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and modification of electrical and electronic systems
  • Support CSA certification of custom build electronics and electrical equipment

Provide Technical Support for Undergraduate Students

  • Supervise, instruct, and assist students with project design and the use of laboratory equipment
  • Develop new and innovative equipment used for undergraduate labs
  • Attend and assist with undergraduate labs and clinics

General Accountabilities

  • Promote and maintain safety standards
  • Manage assigned labs
  • Maintain equipment inventory
  • Conduct workplace inspections
  • General consulting, design, assembly, and rework
  • Be flexibly responsive to evolving research and teaching needs
  • Maintain training levels
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • A diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology or Equivalent
  • 5 years of experience required
  • A strong aptitude for electrical technologies and systems is essential
  • A good knowledge and operational experience in most of the following areas is required:
    • comfortable working on systems at or above 120VAC
    • high power device installation and maintenance
    • CSA evaluation
    • electrical control panel wiring
    • electrical systems maintenance and calibration
    • product sourcing
  • Strength in the following areas is not required, but would be considered an asset:
    • analog and digital test equipment
    • electro-mechanical systems
    • hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric control systems
    • digital data acquisition, monitoring, and control systems
    • computer programming
    • engineering tools such as LabVIEW, PLC software tools, microcontroller development tools
  • Safety standards and procedures
