Career Opportunity

Looking for a new and exciting opportunity? We are hiring for Divisional Assistant Manager, Bus and Rail Transportation.

 

Successful candidates will be placed in the Transportation Strategy and Support Department and complete several months of multi-modal training. Upon completion of training, candidates may be assigned to a Division in Bus, LRT, Streetcar, Subway or Wheel Trans Transportation based on business needs. This position may be assigned variable work hours and off-days dependent on the work assignment. This recruitment may be utilized for future opportunities that become available.

What You Will Do

Reporting to the respective immediate manager, this position is responsible and held accountable for assisting in the day-to-day operation and administration of an assigned Division. Assists in utilizing and developing divisional staff and a unionized workforce to achieve a high degree of employee morale and productivity. The role has a strong leadership focus on engaging employees and managing workforce according to TTC policies and safety standards.

The incumbent will be directly responsible for all day-to-day responsibilities of the Divisional Manager during any periods of absence, including scheduled non-overlapping divisional coverage between the Assistant Divisional Manager and the Divisional Manager. The incumbent may also be required to rotate into other Divisional Assistant Manager positions within Bus, LRT, Streetcar, Subway, Wheel-Trans Transportation and Transportation Strategy and Support, based on operational needs and training and development initiatives.

 

Other responsibilities of your role will include:

 

  • Assists the Divisional Manager in monitoring and directing the daily operations of an assigned division.
  • Supervising the work performance of supervisory and unionized personnel according to Departmental KPIs.
  • Ensuring optimum performance of Operators including safe operation, customer service, and general adherence to policies and procedures as well as Union Agreement provisions.
  • Monitoring and administering current attendance management programs (i.e. Attendance Program) in accordance with departmental and divisional goals and objectives.
  • Investigating various complaints and recommendations as well as interviewing, commending, and counselling employees; initiating corrective measures; submitting reports and following up to ensure compliance.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and administration of policies and regulations of the Commission to ensure an efficient, safe, reliable and courteous transit service through the use of modern technology.
  • Ensuring that customer service-related activities are well managed and remain the focus of TTC employees’ activities.
  • Assists in ensuring that effective Divisional Cost Management Programs are developed and administered.
  • May assume the role of Divisional Assistant Manager, Nights/Weekends as required.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background will consist of the completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Knowledge of business practices and procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of policies, legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, etc.) and initiatives affecting employees and work practices at an assigned Division.
  • Good knowledge of technical issues and an extensive body of rules, procedures and operational issues related to areas of responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of computers and computerized applications related to the work. 
  • Excellent analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills to deal with the complexities of running a Subway or Surface Division.
  • Strong supervisory and interpersonal skills to promote a harmonious working environment for a large, unionized work force and to effectively manage, motivate, counsel, coach, discipline, commend and assess performance of subordinate employees.
  • Ability to track multiple projects and make sound business decisions in a timely fashion to adjust to changing situations.
  • Assisting in managing a 24 hour, 7 days per week operation and effectively dealing with unusual or highly sensitive situations as they arise.
  • Must be well organized and must have effective time management skills, excellent administrative, team building, leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; good public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Must have several years of related work experience, including some supervisory experience with exposure to a broad range of operational activities.
  • Sound knowledge of policies, legislation, the Collective Agreement and initiatives affecting employees and work practices at an assigned Division. 

Must have or acquire a thorough knowledge of the TTC’s organizational structure, functions, operations, policies and procedures as they relate to the work performed.
